THE UNEMPLOYED AT THE THAMES
To the. Editor of tho Hhhald.
Sin, —Nothing surprises me moro thi'-t the reports lately published regarding the si., o of the unemployed at tho Thames. ]S :>arly every ship that arrives hero has difficulties with their craws in consequence of the v.-ages here being one pound per month or :nore higher than in any port in the Austnlian Colonies. The p.a. Jjunn arrived here c :ly a few weeks ago, and bus had to advance the wages of the crew. I hear on all sides iVoui the furmors of the scarcity of labour ; how then is it possible that the statements n'oout starvation at tho Thanic3 can be true ? I am a shareholder in a mine at tho Thames of which the men struck because their wages were pulled down from 83. per day to 10s. per week. —I am, ic, .A Merchant. '; P.S.—I have just spoken to an employer of sixty men at a saw mill and bush, and lie assures me that it is not possible to get hands under 255. a-week, and found board and lodgings.
