CITY BOARD.

The adjourned meeting of the City Board of I Commissioners took place yesterday, at 2 p.m, at the office of the Board. Present: —Mesera. Atkin, Bugden, Aeher, Hampton, and Maoready. Mr. Atkin was voted into the chair. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. PETITIONS. A petition, presented on the 2nd August, from certain inhabitants and ratepayers oi Wellesley-street Saet, Draying for the proper formation of street", was considered. The estimate of the Foreman of Works for rough kerbing and channelling wa3 about £10. Mr. Macready suggested that the roadway be made, but that the other work should be allowed to atand over. Mr. Macready proposed that the Foreman be instructed to form and scoria ash th centre of the street, and that the pathway be i done if the owners of property will contribute half the expense of kerbing and channelling. Seconded by Mr. Hampton , , and carried. Mr. Hampton drew attention to t he ttat of the gutters in Queen-street near the market , house, and the junction of West Quee-.-stieet I nnd Queen-street; also to the corner of , Queen and Cntom-house-street, near Oopl lpnd'e, and to t>>e corner by Governnienthouae gate, to which, the attention of the Board had been frequently called. He moved I that the Inspector of Nuisances be directed to pay nttention to the above mentioned defect?, and to the state of pome of the gratings and cellar flaps in the public thoroughfares. Mr. MaCBEAdy seconded the motion. — Carried. CORMSr-ONDSXCE. A letter was received and read, from Mr. W. Williams, of Cook-street, that before the metal now deposited in Hobson street was put down in Cook-street, the former street should be brought down to its proper level, to the intent that the work might be permanent. The Secretary was ordered to reply that the Board had no funds in band to enable them to comply with the request contained in the letter. Letter from bis TTonor the late Suparintendent, enclosing account of receipt and expenditure of the ' ity Endowment Funds, from Ist January. 1866," to 31st December, ISS9, inclusive. The accounts showed a deficiency of £226 03 Id as against the City Board. Mr. Macready, who moved that the letter he received, threw the whole onus of the aff-iir on the late City Council and subsequent legislation on the same head. He also referred to the General Government having siezed the site for te new Post Office and Custom House, and on application being made to the then Superintendent (Kobert Graham) he was told that the General Government ha-J a right to take any land they might want for any purpose at any time. The Secretary was directed to make further inquiry into tho matter; and a committee was nominated by Mr. Hampton, seconded by Mr. Abher. to further investigate the question of city endowments—committee to consist of Messrs. Macready, Atkin, Asher, and the mover. Letter was received and read from his Honor the present Superintendent relative to a fire beU in Lower Queen-street, which Mr. Pierce, agent for the New Zealand Insurance Company, had written asking permission to erect on tho ground occupied by the Native Market. Permission granted. Mr. Maceeady movod that an address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, praying that steps may be taken at once to remedy the nuisance existing at the bottom of Q.ueen-3treet, caused by the outlet of the main eewer. Mr. Ashek seconded the resolution.— Carried. Mr. Macready moved, and Mr. Ashee seconded, that the Board be at the expense of the bell, which, when a permanent erection was once made, should bs returned to them. Letter from Cruickshank, Smart and Co., calling attention to the rent charged, namely, £55, for the use of tho Board's offices, aud intimating th&t in future the rent must be raised to £75 per annum. Moved by Sir. AsHEtt, that the consideration of the question bo postponed to a fuller meeting of the Hoard. Mr. Hampton proposed that the' rent demanded be paid, namely, £75 per annum. Seconded by Mr. Ashee, and curried. The report of the b'oreman of Werts was the next business. Prior to consideration of this, hoitewr, Mr. MaciieaSY called the attention of ihe Biard to the state of the funds, fie wished to know had the Board money to do the work ? Moved by Mr. BuGDkn, seconded by Mr. Macready, " That the Secretary be instructed to apply to iVfr. MucCjrmick for tha document necessary for the signatures of the inhabitants of Yincent-3troet, before tho cutting of the road be commenced." The Secretary thut there was &bout £554 in hand, subject to reduction of payments to he passim that day. Mr. Asiiei moved " That Wellingtonstreet be the next street attended te after Vincent-street." Mr. Jlackeadt moved that the matter stand ever with thut understanding until the Buard had funds in hand. Mr. Asher withdrew his resolution, and s:c nded Mr. Mncready's. —Carried. REPORT OP COMMITTEE ON DAXGEUOT/S i GOODS ACT I On the motion of Mr. Macready, seconded by Mr. Hampton, the fnrther consideration of this report was postpanod until the next fortnightly rittins of the bourd, and in the meantime the committee be naked to draw up the necessary by-laws in readinese for that meo!in<r.—(lurried. Mr. Uamvtox moved, and Mr. Macready seconded, " 1 hat tho public be notified by advertisement, that the Dangerous Goods A t would be put in force on the Ist January next."—Carried. XOTICE3 OF MOTION. Mr. Staiies' notice, owing to that gentleman's absence. l:ipssd. ELKCTIOS OF CHAIUMAN. A and irregular discussion too'; plico on tho question of the election of a Chairman. Mr. Macready moved, "That in future the salary of thu Chairman be £100 per annum." Mr. Buodex seconded the motion. TWr. Hampton moved as an amendment, " That the s.lary be £75 per annum." Seconded by Mr. Ashbu. The voting being even, a ballot wis taken, when it was found that tho sraulier sum, viz, £75, was carried. Mr. Macrkady moved, " That the Council, «t its rising, do adjourn nntil 3 pm. on Thursday " Seconded by Mr. jlaiii'TO.v. Curried.
