ARRIVAL OF THE STAR OF THE SOUTH. The s.s. Star of the South, Captain W. Bendall, arrived in harbour from Napier en Saturday morning. She left Napier on Thursday, at five a m., and experienced fivs-h south winds and a heavy cross sea in ILiwke's -Bay. ARRIVAL OF THE BELSTZE. Tlie ,15elsize, a fine roomv vessel, of nearly 400 toils register, anchored In harbour yesterday morning, bringhis a canjo of sugars from Mauritius, specially selected for this market. Captain T. Rundle reports that he made the passage to Geelong in forty-three days, and on airival there discharged* a portion of his cargo, which was landed in splendid condition. She nn-ived at G-eelong on the Stli, and left on the 22ud November. "She was detained three days iu trie Si raits with ballling winds, and t hen caught a fresh westerly breeze, which enabled her to make n capital run of six days to the Three Kings. The himl was made on Wednesday last,"and since .S.K and S.W. winds have prevaik'f!. After discharging her cargo, this vessel will ho op?n for sakC freight, or charter to any p:irt of the world. .She has been mostly employed in tin; sugar t-ado between London and the Mauritius, and always discharges her ea-go in Urst-rate order. The liels'ize has very large carrying capacity, and generally makes goo;! passages. THK CITY OF AUCKLAND. Bv the mail just received from England we have received a letter [1-0111 Ciiptnin Ashby, of the new clipper ship City of Auckland, lie says—" We are fa* I filling up with cargo for your port, and shall be full of saloon passengers. We have also 2o second class, and 3D steerage passengers. The ship Maori will not come to Auckland again, Captain Roberts having left her to take charge of the Cadueeus, one of the old New Zealand traders. She is to sail from Plymouth for Australia on the Hith October, -with 350 emigrants. We shall leave Gravesend on the 20th October, and T hope, to reach Auckland about the middle of •lanuarv, leaving r> gain for England on tUe 2Sth February." DROWNING OF CAPTAIN STAFFORD. We regret, to learn by the arrival of the schooner Mary Ellen, on Saturday morning, of the death, by drowning, of Captain Station*, who for a long time was master of that vessel. On Saturday morning an enquiry was instituted at the Custom Honse before JI- S. McKellar, Esq., to ascertain by wh.it means the unfortunate man was drowned, when the following evidence was adduced .- — John Wilson, master of the May Queen, sworn : We left Grahainstowii "t S o'clock on Thursday, December 2, in tue evening. About half-past nine, tlic oupl.j'n. .Tohn Stafford, came on deck, and went to sleep on the cabin companion. About tc» minutes to twelve my mate relieved me, and I bad been below about forty minutes, when be called to me, and said, " Jack is overboanl." T jumped np and called his brother-ui-!:i«-. Ho and I reached the
deck at the same time, in about half a miuute, and also one of the passengers. We called out Ms nnine and t'ac others launched the boat. We -were not three minutes from the lime at which the alarm was given. We pulled round in the wake of the craft for about forty minutes, and could see nothing of him, so we proceeded back to Shortland, and reported it to his brother-in-law, so that he might take the news up in the steamer. He was quite sensible in his talk. I knew he had been taking some liquor. He told me that he woidd trust the vessel in my charge. He gave me the course ; [it was not quite correct. I had charge of the vessel. The vessel vras going about one or one and a half knots at. the time of the accident. The night was tine ; very little wind ; it was clear ; no moon. It ivas about the first o£ the Hood tide. It happened about half way between Tararii and flie SmuUpit — about (he middle of the Frith of the Thames. There was no sea ; it was quite calm. We had three hands, aH told, and three passengers. William Welfelt, seaman on board, said : I was on board the Mavy Ellen on Tuesday night- last between twelve and one. John Wilson came and asked me to relieve him at the helm. I did so. Stafford was lying on the skylight asleep at the timo ; he had his clothes on. The wind being very light, I went forward to haul the staysail sheet to windward, and while doing so I heard Station! vomiting, and almost immediately afterwards I heard a splash, and ' I ran aft, but I could not see Stafford. There was a motion in the water as if somebody was overboard. I could not distinguish anybody. I could hear a gurgling noise. I immediately called John Wilson ; we got the boat out directly we came on 'lenk, and two men and I got into her, while Wilson looked after the boat, to try and find him. We could not sec any appearance of him. We were about twenty minutes looking for 3iim. It was light enough to see him. The bulwarks are a little over three feet. The skylight is about level with the bulwark. He could not have been knocked over by the boom because there was not sufficient wind. Sale of Her Majesty's Ste.uiees.—By order of the Royal Commissioners of the Admiralty, a public sale took place on September 23, at Lloyd's, of two of Her Majesty's steamers lying at Sbeerness Dockyard, namely, the Landrail, 427 tons measurement, with engines of 80 horse-power, built at- Deptford in ISGO ; and the Falcon, 751 tons measurement, built at Pembroke Dockyard in 1554, and engines of 100 horse-power. The ships' fittings, rigging, Ac, and engineers' stores were included in the sale. The Landrail steamer was knocked down for .-61,328, and the Falcon sold for £2,200. — Evropvnn Mail, October 8. The s.s. Keera was to leave Napier, with a cargo of cattle and sheep, on Saturday last, for this port. The s.s Rungatira may be expected in harbour to-day, or early to-morrow, from Southern ports.
