SUPERINTENDENCY ELECTION.

MR. GILLIES AT HOWICK. Mr. GiiiLtES addressed the electors of this district yesterday from the balcony of the Shamrock and Thistle Hotel. The number of electors present fell short of what might have been expected had the hour been later. There were assembled about fifty pensioners. On' the motion of Mr. Kelly, Dr. Hovell was called to the chair. The Chairman explained the circumstances in which he was placed, and called on the electors to give Mr. Gillies a fair hfaring. Mr. Gillies then addressed the electors. The prominent features of his speech were almost identical with those of the speeches delivered on the hustings at Onehunga, Otahuhxi, and Panmure. Several questions were then put to him, as to the boundaries of Highway Districts, Education, the Ballot, Fencing, and other subjects interesting to country settlers.' Mr. Gillies announced that he was,,in'favor of the ballot. A vote of confidence iu Mi 1 . Gillies was passed, suid a committee formed. After the meeting, which was held at one o'clock and concluded a little after three, Mr. Gillies proceeded to Panmure, where ho was engaged to address tho electors at 7 o'clock p.m.

PANMURE At *7 o'clock Mr. GUllies addressed a numerous and influential meeting of electors at the Ferry Hotel, Panmure. J. Kerr, Esq., M.H.R., was called to the chair, and opened the meeting in a few appropriate remarks. Mr. Gillies then addressed the meeting at gre.it length, and was listened to with attention throughout. He went over his former arguments, and at the conclusion of his address, Mr. R. M. Ueyburn moved, and Mr. W. J. Young seconded, the following resolution : —" That this meeting having heard Mr. Gillies' views, have full conlider.ee in him, and pie Ige themselves to secure his return to the office of Superintendent of the Province of Auckland." Mr. Lundon spoke at some length against the resolution, bvitit was carried by a very huge majority.
