TROOPER NEWNHAM SHOT BY THE HAUHAUS.
TE KOOTI WITH 300 MEN AT | TAUPO LAKE. June 14, 3'48 p.m. A letter, dated 12th instant, arrived from Mr. Birch, of Patea, in Napier, last night. Patea natives stated that the Pokana friendlies had sent word that two of Te Kooti's women reported Te Jvocti, with a large party, at Tauranga, Lake I'aupo; he had killed an old Maori, and burnt whares, and had killed the scouts at Opepe passing through, when.going to join the Hauhaus west of the Lake. Hori Taiteku, with most of his people, had retired fron. Pokana, leaving Pauriki to watch Te Kooti's movements. Heuheu had gone to inform the Arawas of Te Kooti's whereabouts. loth, 5.20 p.m. On the 10th, Trooper Newnham was shot two miles from "Wairoa, beside Herrick's camp. A carpenter with him, whose horse was shot, escaped by jumping on the trooper's horse. 14th, noon. Te Kooti and 300 men are at Taupo Lake, They have burnt Paora Uapi's whares at Hatepi, and killed one old man. The enemy appear to move where they like, and lay ambuscades for our people. •
