TITO KOWARU BETWEEN WANGANUI AND WELLINGTON. NAREOW ESCAPE OF THE ' STUET' FEOM FIRE. We are indebted to the Editor of the Nelson Colonist for the following latest telegraphic intelligence :— " Wellington, Sunday night. " A special messenger lias just arrived from Wanganui with despatches for Mr. Stafford. Tito Kowaru is now on the Eangitikei side of Wanganui, having crossed the Wanganui river higher up. " This is very alarming and important news. " Wellington, Monday. 10.50. " The Government denv the correctness of the report brought to Wellington yesterday by the messenger, Braithwaite. Braithwaite states that he left Wanganui at 2 o'clock' yesterday morning, and that Tito Kowaru had then crossed over the river at Kai Waiki, and was supposed to be coming down the Turakina river. | " The messenger meets the refusal of the | Government to receive his statement by firmly reiterating it, and says that intense excitement prevailed at Kangitikei, and women and families were hastening off to "Wanganui. "Braithwaite arrived here at five o'clock yesterday afternoon, thus accomplishing the journey of one hundred and thirty miles in fifteen hours, during which lie changed horses five times. "It is expected that. Tito Kowaru will be joined by a party of kangitikei Hauhaus. " Great alarm felt in Wellington yesterday, though subsiding a little to-day. " The p.s. Start has been nearly destroyed at sea by fire, owing to spontaneous combustion of oilskin wrappers on board."
