MEETING OF THE AUCKLAND MEMBERS AND THEIR CONSTITUENTS.
A cbowded meeting was held last evening at the Mechanics' Institute, to have the opinions of the Auckland Members of the : House of [Representatives on certain important public questions, previous to their going to Wellington for the next session of the Assembly. Messrs. A. Clarke, John Williamson',. George Graham, Thomas Ball, J. Macfarlane, P. Dignan, and Major Heaphy, representatives of various constituencies, attended and addressed the meeting. We may summarize the opinions given by saying that they were generally decidedly favorable to retrenchment, to the abolition of the Defence Office, the great curtailment of the Native Office, the abolishment of the Panama subsidy, great alteration in the Fencing Act, and generally a simplification and reduction of government expenditure, of Resident Magistrates, and more especially insular separation. It will be seen that these views have been constantly advocated in the Hebald; ; -
