ELECTORAL ROLLS.
To the Editor of the Heeald. Sib,—l perceive that the Begistration Officer has given notice of objection to the names of certtiin persons now od the electoral rolls for Auckland City and Suburbs. It is quite apparent that an excessive degree of caution has been exercised relative to the disqualified voters, as their numher might easily be increased and substantiated tenfold. I know of many men who have long since disposed of their property and left the district; others who have gone to Australia or elsewhere, and many who are dead, yet their names have been retained on the register from year to year. During the last contested elections in the East and West wards, it was found that the disqualifications might then be counted by hundreds, yet the whole of the present objections do not exceed 95, which include tho;e in the Northern Division, Parnell, Newton, and the East and West wards. This modicum of purification is commendable as far as it extends, but it must not be imagined that the Augean stable has been cleansed because a few straws of corruption have been swept therefrom. To get rid of the whole mass of irregularity, the besom of reform must be brought to be:ir upon it in a very different manner to that which baa now been adopted ; but, I presume, the evil will now have to be borne for another year, during which period many additional alterations will have taken place, owing to the attractions of the gold-fields at the Thames and elsewhere. When the period for revision again presents itself, I trust there will be found BOme one whose doty it will be to find out the whole of the disqualifications in each divisional roll, and have them duly objected to.—Yours, &c, An Elector. May 12,18G8.
