OTAGO. The aggregate of busine s since the date o: the last report"has been moderate. Slackness has been a characteristic of the major part of the month, and no features of interest can be referred to. A tolerably steady trade has gone forward for local wants, ■while importers' operations hare, of necessity, through few goods coming forward, been light. Orders for extra Provincial requirements hav3 _ also been below the average. However the setting in of a better demand is apparent, and traders are looking forward to an improved coastwise trade during the coming winter months. though not active, have been steady. Lessening stocks, with advices.of scanty shipments from all parts, have caused some improvement in the values of one or two staples, j and imparted additional firmness to the values of most goods. The only arrivals from ports outside the Colonies have been the Celestial Queen, from London ; and Prospector, from Valparaiso—the latter with flour. The last ships loading woo are nearly full, ana the season all 'but ended ; the total amount of the clip will realise anticipations. Last Home advices, though of a more favorable nature, came to hand too late tn allow of any business of moment being done on the spot. During the month a firm, d-ing local business only, found it necessary to call a meeting of creditors. The amount of liabilities proved less than was at first supposed, and no diminution of confidence in commercial circles has been thereby occasioned. General credit has not at any time. been better maintained than at present. The money market is | easy.— Times, May 5.

An exceedingly \juiet dny has been passed in the import markets, and business throughout has so largely cartaien of a retail character that few or no transactions of any importance have been recorded. Broadstuffs and obtain very little notice. Flour has been"offering freely at £21, without finding buyers, who do not care to purchase at over £20 10b net, or £21 to £21 5s on terms. Teas are moved off in moderate parcels up to 2s 2d, at which wehear ofl2o chests having changed hands. Trade sales are also reported at prices ranging from le 4Jd for good common congous, to Is 7d for mediums. Operations in sugars are unimportant, having been limited to purchases for immediate wants at £34 for yellow crystals, and up to £38 for white crystals. Currants continue to find buyers at 4d, and as stocks in the hands of the dealers had been worked down to a mere nothing, considerable quantities have been disposed of of late. —Argus, Apsil 24.

SYDNEY. The Imi-obt Markets.—No vessels have arrived from England during the past twelve days. The Golden Sea, from London, is reported off the coast. From the United States the Crußader arrived during the month with a general cargo, and the Electra from Payta. with a cargo of petroleum. Trade is rather quiet; but, as stocks are now getting below the average, holders are very firm. Some descriptions of goods are much wanted, and in the absence of shipments from England must rule high. Bonded goods are in light supply. American Goodb. —Stocks have been replenished by the arrival of the Crusader, and prices rule somewhat similar to last month's, except for oil, which has declined to Is lid to 2s. Ftßh, hardware, and woodware are dull of sale. The tobacco market is q-dot, except for fine negrohead, which is quoted at Is 4d to Is 81. Aromatic has been bought up in Melbourne, but the operations have not affected this market. Inferior twist is obtainable at lOd to Is. ffoneydew, first-class, Is per lb. ; common and medium quality, 6d to 9d; cavendish, half pounds, 6d to Is. Aromatics much lower than last month, and not more than Is 3d can be obtained for good quality. Manila cigars have advanced to per 1000, with a still uj>ward tendency. Swiss out of demand.

Candies. —The market is moderately supplied at 12d to 12£ d for full-weights, and lOd to for 12oz. Coffee. —Shipments from Melbourne are the print {pi! Rourco of supply. Oood currants were sold this week at 3gd. Fine Kleme raisins were offered at 7d. Figs are worth 5d to 7d., according to qu ilitv. Dundee Goods.—There has been enquiry respecimg comaacks and woolpacks, but we have heard of no transactions to change last quotations. FlcH. —Sales continue to leave a considerable loss to importers, and as the stock is still very large, there is no hope of much improvement for a time. Li«uoa3 —For bulk and bottled beer there is fair enquiry, but no change in prices. Bridie; are much tirmej. kartell's and Hennessy's on the spot are quoted at 8; 6d to 9s, and owners of parcels to arrive are unwilling to name a figure ; second eliss biands are also about 6d higher—caße has not advanced proportionately. more full intelligence respecting the alleged damage to the crops at Mauritius. itome lines of crystals and counters were offered at auction on Wednesday, and passed at vendor's limits. * salt.— Market very firm. Sales have been at from £5 15s to £6 ; rock has declined to about £5 os. Teas. —Prices have hardened a little since the arrival of last mnil.
