MUSIC IN PUBLIC-HOUSES.
The following is a copy of the petition presented to Eis Honor tho Superintendent yesterday:—■ "To His Honor John Williamson, Superintendent of tho Province of Auckland, and their Worships the Justices of the Peace for the Auckland District :— " Thi9 petition sheweth that your petitioners are by calling and profession seajien, soldiers, tradesmen, &c., and that your petitioners have been been accustomed elsewhere, and latterly in tho City of Auckland, after their day's work was over, to enjoy a little innocent amusement by adjourning to any hotel whero they could hear music and listen to a sooial Bong. That your petitioners can vouch and bear witness to the belief those houses, or hotels in Auckland, where such amusements were offered tended in no manner whatever to a breach of thei peace ; but your petitioners firmly believe many wero kept from getting into the society of characters which would have a lamentable result. Your petitioners are now deprived of such innocent recreation, in consequence, as your petitioners are informed, of an edict from the Heeident-- Mugiatrute ; and your petitioners do now humbly request that your Honor, and you worshipful gentlemen, may graciously take ■ tho niattor into consideration, and permit hotels to have music in the evenings, thereby enabling your petitioners to spend a pleasant and peaceful evening. And your humble petitioners us in duty bound will ever pray. J. H. HOEHE, J.P., AND .* 11 OUT 1,000 SIGNATURES. " May 4, 1863."
