KENNEDY'S BAY.

The announcement that alluvial gold had been discovered at Kennedy's Bay occasioned, ai might indeed have been expected, considerable stir yesterday in town. V arious rumors were afloat; in one case that a number of men hare been quietly working tiiere for a week or two past, and they have been averaging about £1 per day. It is true, however, that a fair sample of alluvial gold has been brought down from tl" 2neo, wash' 1 out of a. small quantity of dirt, for we have ourselves seen and handled it.

The Tauranga, which left for Shortland yesterday, will proceed round Cape Colville to Kennedy's Bay, with Mr. James Mackay, jun., who will, having received the. consent of the principal owners, proceed at once to open the district, and some half-dozen gentlemen from Auckland amongst those are Messrs. J. Smart and Macready—the latter of whom we ' hear is about to erect an hotel in anticipation of a rush to the locality. The Tauranga will leave'again for Kennedy's Bay on Thursday. There have been several prospecting parties out about Kennedy's Bay, with satisfactory results. The party of three who had a pass from the Commissioner were most successful. They found gold every place j they tried, and prospected ground that would support from two to three hundred men. In two days' work they panned upwards of two ounces of gold. The news of these discoveries having spread to Shortland, parties of men started overland for the new diggings, and a rush is certain 1 .

The discovery of gold in paying quantities in tliat locality is also a matter of congratulation, as showing that the auriferous lands are not confined to the western watershed of the main ridge.
