THE AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL.
The Council having sanctioned the appropriation of the funds accumulated under the Grammar School and College Trust endowment to the establishment of a grammar school in the city of Auckland, arrangements will be at once made for giving effect to the action of the Council. We understand that the large building in Newton, known as the Immigration Depot, will be set apart for the uses of the school, and that it will, in a very short time, be opened for educational purposes. Meantime there are several applicants in the field for the appointment of Head-master or Principal, and influences of various kinds are being brought to bear upon the gentlemen with whom the appointment rests. The success or otherwise of the school will of course be very materially affected by the manner in which this appointment may be filled up. It is a most important one, and should command the serious attention not only of the • Trustees, but of the public generally, who are interested in the matter. By all means let us have a first-class man, and let the appointment, as far as the means of the institution will allow, be liberally endowed. Scholastic attainments, high moral character, and experience in teaching, must all enter largely into the qualifications of any one appointed to so important a position as that of forming the minds and characters of a large proportion of the next generation of the citizens of Auckland.
