CRICKET.
The return match of cricket between the Waiuku and Maukn Clubs wag played on Tuesday, on Mesers. Hamlin's paddock at Waitanga, and although the Mauku side was ittengthened by the adhesion of Messrs. higgs and Butler, another defeat -was the result. The Mauku side took the bats first, but the only fair s'ores made were those by Messrs. Hill, Uutler, and. Fenton. On the Waiuku fide, JJeesrs. Charles Barriball arrl Green made a good stand of 1 hour and 35 minutes, and vere not parted till they had run up the score to 53. Mr. Hatrlin then joined Nreen, but went out with a round 0. Messrs. Mactier and Browning also made good scores, both getting d'ublo figures. Aa it was nearly six p.m. before the first innings was completed, the game was decided by it. WAIUKU. MAUKU. C. THE NEW GOVERNOR'S EECEPTION. A MEETINO was held yesterday, at 11 a.m., at the store of Meesre. L. D. Nathan and Co., covened by circular, at which most of the leading merchants attended, to take into consideration the reception to be given to the new Governor on his arrival iu Auckland. Oα tho motion of Mr. McKbltie, seconded by Mr. GILIIES, His Honor the Superintendent was called to tho chair. Tho ChaIBMAN in opening the meeting said he had made enquiries, and he believed His h'xellenuy would arrive in the mail steamer on the 2nd March, there beinc no man-of-war available, and tho Sturt not having sufficient accommodation for a family. After some conversation, a Committee consisting of Messrs. SlcKeMe, Nathan, Owen, Wliitson, l.evyn, and Aitken, was formed for the purpose of carr\ ing out the necessary arrangements. Mr. McKelvio was appointed treasurer, and a subscription list opened for tho purpose of placing a carriage at Hie disposal of His Excellency. A sum of £40 was subscribed on the spot. It was suggested to ask the publio bodice to form a procession, togother with the Rifle Volunteers, a:ld also to eoinmunioalo with tho Provincial Government as to tho propriety of keeping the day as a public holiday. The meeting then dispersed.
