RAGLAN.
"We hare been requested by several settlers belonging to the district of Eaglan, now in Auckland, to draw the attention of the Provincial Council to the signature of the petition lately presented to that body by Mr. J. (J. Johnstone. That petition was a private one, was, in fact, the petition of Mr. Johnstone himself, and no other person. Mr. Johnstone is, however, the Chairman of the Whaingaroa Highway Board of Trustees, and in signing this private petition of his own to the Council, he has added to his signature the words " Chairman of the Whaingnroa Highway Board." Now the Eaglan settlers who are one and all opposed to the petition of Mr. Johnstone complain, and very justly, that in signing a private petition he had no right to affix the above words to his name. They argue that the use of them is calculated to mislead the Council into a belief that it was as Chairman of the Board that he signed the petition, and not simply as a private individual. They request us to state distinctly that Mr. Johnstone added these words -vithout authority, and that the Highway Board of Trustees, and the ratepayers generally, are opposed to the views embodied in his petition.
