WANGAROA NORTH.
To the Editor of the New Zeaeand Hbbaed. Siu, —Allow me to give you a description of the number of inhabitants of thiß place, having been a resident in this harbour for a long time. We have about two hundred Bettlers residing in the district, independent of a laTga Maori population around us.
We are expecting a visit from the Magistrate, who, from various causes, haa not appeared among us for nearly six months. But for several visits previous, he has scarcely had a case to attend to. Things are now altered ; we have a very energetio constable, who is a great adept at getting up cases; to that our worthy and learned magistrate may expect to be fully employed in future, particularly 3 be works harmoniously with the eye of the law, as the constable Btyles himself.
Sow, sir, we need a constable, but we want a man that will attend to his own affairs, and not attempt to domineer over the settlers; such conduct will be resented, I have no doubt.
The principal part of the inhabitants think it necessary that a Justice of the Peace or two should be appointed for this part, as parties wishing to get summonses hare to travel twenty-six miles to the magistrate's residence for that purpose, when Justices of the Peace in the neighbourhood may grant summonses and hear trivial cases. At all events, one might be chosen by the voice of the people to assist the magistrate to arrive at just conclusions, besides holding a check upon any constable who may wißh to tyrannize over the inhabitants.—l nm, &c., Looeer-on.
[We hare to apologise to our correspondent that his letter has been so long kept from, publication, having been mislaid, till now.—Ed. N.Z.H.]
