FLAX HACKLE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
The sub-committee of the above Society, appointed to provide rations for Company aSTo. 1 and Company No. 2 in accordance with a resolution passed by the general committee, met this afternoon, at 3 o'clock at Mr. Coupland's. Present—Messrs. 0. Lewis, president; Griffin, "Wilkes, and Coupland. • A. letter was read wliicli liad been addressed to the Treasurer, "W". C. Wilson, Esq., and other members of the Flax Hackle Benevolent Society, signed James Speedy, informing the Society that two men had been sent down to Auckland from tho Waipipi settlement, for the purpose of being instructed in the Society's steaming process of dressing flax, and soliciting on behalf of the unemployed that an apparatus, on tho new principle, bo supplied to enable about twenty men, who are in a state of destitution, to earn, money to relieve themselves, by dressing flax in the neighbourhood, in which there is an abundant supply of the raw material. _ "The two men mentioned in the letter arrived in town yesterday afternoon, m l were present at No. 3 company watching i • steaming and hackling operations in proper >;o;king order, and appeared to take considerable interest in the matter.
The letter was ordered to be submitted to the general committee, on Tuesday next, during which time the men will receive every information requisite to master the system from members of the several companies, and by watching a practical test which is hourly going on in several localities in Auckland and Newton.
Moved by Mr. Giuffin, " That the sum of twenty-five pounds sterling be paid by this committee, to provide rations for No, 1 Com* pany, and that the sum of twenty-two pounds ten shillings be paid for rations for Ho. 2 Company—total, £47 10s., in accordance with a resolution of the present committee, to complete the arrangements for these two companies, and enable them to procecd to the flax field, without delay." Seconded by Mr. Wiikes. Motion put and carried. . Tlic Secretary "was famished witn. instructions to carry out the above resolutions and also to provide for the conveyance of the two companies on next. The Secretary gave instructions to a respectable house to carry out the order on behalf of the society, and in compliance with a resolution of the general committee, to draw on the treasurer when signed by the president, certifying that it has been completed. The attention of the two sub-committees will now be directed towards the furnishing of hackles and provisions for companies No 3 and No. 4, to follow No. 1 and Wo. 2 to the flax field early next week, or, indeed, as soon as the hackles can be obtained.
