WELLINGTON.
Bx the Taranaki we have received "Wellington files to the 23rd; Lyttelton and Otago to the 16th. In consequence, however, of the length of the Colonial Treasurer's budget speech we are unable to give lengthy extracts from Southern papers. In reference to. Mr. Etzherbert's speech, which will be found elsewhere, we may state that we have received the proof sheets only of it, as printed for the New Zealand Hansard. Some slight alterations would, doubtless, be made m the revise. We mention this in justice to the speaker. A. large fire has taken place at Nelson, and two at Taranaki, and one also at "Wellington. An account of the three first will be fqund elsewhere. The amount of property destroyed at the Wellington fire would j appear to be some £400 or £500.
It wall be seen that the Assembly has granted a sum of £5000 for preparations for the reception of Prince Alfred. For an epitome of the general business of the House, since our last advices, we refer
our readers to the letter of our own corres
pondent. In the letter of a " special correspondent," 'will be found an able review of the events of the session up to the Lriumph. of the Government on the passing of the second reading of the G-old Melds Amendment A.ct.
