COUNTRY MEMBERS FOR COUNTRY DISTRICTS.

To the Editor of the New Zealand Herald. Bie, —On coming to town out of the bush, and not seeing o paper for a week or two, I tell you, I was somewhat piqued at seeing our division (Northern), in my estimation trifled with ; true, my intellectual furniture may be a little out of order, but I look upon it as absurd that anyjone having interest in the oouniry. should choose townsmen to represent them, and its my idea that a man, however well intentioned he may be, cannot represent our wants, unles* he has practical knowledge o£ them. The corn dealers of Queen-street, know nothing of the requirements of us settlers ; trading in Auckland will never school men into fit and proper representatives for this wide spread district. No, s:r, the plain duty to mo is, to show uiimistalieably that in future we -will have tried resident men -who know what the country is, that have hud to contend with the rough and tumble of bush life ; and, are consequently alive to all that concerns opening up the country, and understand the requirements of the settlers. "We want the country opened up, and must have it. That must be the all important measure of the day. The I'md must be get-at-able. Hundreds of families would then get to the country, and the time has arrived when we should demand through our legislators, that a grand trunk road be made from the NoTth Shore to Wangarei; if the lands are opened out, 1 believe hundreds of families will leave town, and occupy them in a very short time. This will result in much good to all hands, town and country. I say, fellow settlers of the Northern Division, show by the unanimity of j our voting, that you will not any longer place your interests in the hands of gentlemen who know not your wants, neither will they, because they are not like you and I, Auckland, Juno 19, ISG7. li U>JIM kx.
