I NORTHERN ASSURANCE COMPANY. FIRS AND LIFE. ESTABLISHED 183 6. CAPITAL, £2,000,000. RESERVE FUND, £800,000. FIliK DEPARTMENT. IN"S~O\RAi!fCjE3 against iire are effected oil nearly every description of property at current rates of premium, and losses promptly settled. life department. Tho rates charged .in Australia are the same as those in England, being calculated on tho latest data of mortality there, and will be found peculiarly 1 favourable to Assurers. The Life Busings is divided into two distinct Branches: — 1. THE NON-PAF.TXCIPATION BRANCH, the Assured in which receive no additions to their Policies; the premiums being calculated on th.o lowest scale consistent with safety ; and •2. THE PARTICIPATION BKANCH, in which the whole profits, less a fixed percentage of th.Q premiums, for management and guarantee of tha sums assured, belong to the Policy-holders; and, in, reckoning these profits, the Com pan j T is, under its new Act of Parliament (1565), precluded from deducting anything beyond v/hat is actually paid away as commission to agents. The necessity felt hy all purely Mutuiil Societies of setting aside & , portion of their profits to form a guarantee fund is in this way avoided, and at Die same time that economy which is the boast of the mutual system is ensured. Policies can be sunendcred after they have been three years in duration, either (1) for their equitable cash value: or (2) o policy will be issued, free of future premiums, lor a sum equivalent to such value j or (3) a portion of the policy can be surrendered, and the Assuranco continued for the reduced amount, allowance being made for the premiums already paid. Policy-holders, in event of removal, can pay their renewal premiums at any of the Company's offices or Agencies at home or abroad. Loans.—Loans are granted on deposit of tha Company's Policies to the extent of their acquired value, free of legal expense to the borrower, the rate of interest charged being six per cent per annum. The last Bonus declared by the Company (in 1865) was at the rate of £1 7s. 6d. per cent per annum on the amount insured—a return which has been very rarely exceeded by any office, when the moderate rates of this Company are taken into account. Forms of proposals and every information can b6 obtained at tho office of the undersigned. THOMAS MAOKT, Queen-street, Agent for the Province of Auckland. WHAT IS LIFE ASSURANCE ? 1. It is the exercise of prudence—of benevolence. 2. It secures independence—domestic happiness to the widow and orphan. 3. It is more efficacious in its operation, as regards the moral and domestic comfort of the people, and in its tendency to reduce taxation, by its reduction of pauperism, and possibly of crime, than the legislation of our wisest statesmen, and if universally adopted, would be a national blessing. 4. It affords to persons of every class, and in every station of life, the means to avoid much future misery to thei families, and to render them independent of public or private charity 5. It is a scheme by which any sum of money may be secured at death, whenever that event may take place, or to be received at any given age of the life assured.
