Hew Style of Photography".—We have been shown by Mr. Bartlett, photographist, of Queen-street, a new applicatioa of the art of photography in portrait taking. The likeness is first taken in the usual way in any size the sitter may choose, and is then worked up in mezzotint. The:e portraits unite the effect only to be obtained from the pencil or the brush, with the extreme accuracy seldom to be obtained but by the photographic process. The likeness shown to us was that of a well known citizen, and was in every respect inost marvellous as a likeness, and lifelike in its appearance. It is, we believe, the first of the kind vet taken in this colony. Auckland Eifle Volunteees.— The whole of the companies are ordered to assemble at the fire bell, Pricces-street. on Wednesday evening next, at 7 o'clock, for the purpose of night marching. The ship Ironside, Captain Hedley, arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon from London, after a good passage of 110 days, bringing a full general cargo and some fifty-two passengers, all well. Nothing of interest occurred during the passage, which seems, on the whole, to have been a pleasant one. The Ironside also brings a consignment of two valuable horses, several dogs, pigs, &.C., also a quantity of prize poultry, the property of Mr. Brown, of Napier. They will be forwarded to their destination this morning, per s.s. Star of the South. The full report of her passage will be found in our shipping columns. Pbince of Wales Theatee. —Testerday evening an amateur dramatic entertainment was given in this place of amusement in aid of the funds of the Ladies' Benevolent Society. The attendance was not so large as might have been expected, but probably this may be accounted for by the presence of a counter attraction in another place, which doubtless drew the attendance of many of the habitues of the theatre. The pieces chosen for the evening's amusement were Douglas Jerrolds' domestic drama of the "Kent Day," and the farce of the "Steeplechase, or in the pigskin." The pieces went pretty well, with the exception of a few hitches which are inevitable on a first night, especially | when the performers, as in this instance, are amateurs. The characters of Crumbs the steward, (Mr. Gowers); Martin Heywood, (Mr. Symonds) ; Hachel Haywood, (Miss Yernon); and Polly Briggs, (Miss Tfoon), the principal characters in the piece, were well sustained, and were several times loudly applauded. The farce was a screamer, and sent the audience away in good humour with themselves and the performers too. Division Election.—A public meeting was held at the Flagstaff Hotel, IS orth Shore, at 7 p.m. yesterday evening, to consider the course to be adopted in the forthcoming election of a member to represent the .Northern Division in the Provincial Council. Mr. Wynn occupied the chair, and after considerable discission, a show of hands was called in favor of the various candidates, when a majority appeared in favor of Mr. Henry Dacre. The meeting was throughout conducted in an orderly manner. A. IST.
