PUFF.

• To the Editor of the New Zealand Herald . Silt, —I have for some time beenfmuch amused in looking over tho reports of public meetings, called by advertisement, which appear in the Cross, to seo regularly the notice, which seems to be stereotyped, that the Chairman read the advertisement calling the meeting from tho Daily Sotjtiiebn Cnoss." To-day, on looking oyer tho report of the City Board elections in both' papers, I find that in tho Cross it is represented that the Returning Officer read the advertisement calling the meeting from the Daily Southern Cross, and in the llkhald from tho New Zealand Hekald. As it is scarcely likely that tho Returning Officer reads two papers at ono time, may I ask which statement is correct. —\ours, &c., Cuiuous. Auckland, Juno 14. [The matter is hardly worth tho trouble our correspondent has taken. Our cotemporary thinks that his standing as having any hold upon public opinion requires tho necessity of such pafllng, and his reporters usually make a point of thrusting a copy of tho Cross into the hands of any chairman of a meeting to make it appear to the public that every chairman naturally takes up tho Cross. Wo are sorry our cotemporary has to take to such shifts to keep up a position. In tho case referred to by our correspondent the advertisement was read from this paper.—Ed. N.Z.H.]
