THE JAMAICA PROSECUTION.

Tins prosecution has at length been opened. Application was made on February 6tli to Sir Thomas Ilcnry, at Bow-street Police Court, for warrants for the arrest of Brigadier-General Nelson, and Lieutenant Brand, K.N., on charges of murder. Mr. Fitzjamcs Stephen made the application, and stated that Mr. J. S. Mill, A! .P.. and Mr. P. A. Taylor, M.P., were the prosecutors. Mr. Stephen went into the legal bearings of the case, and witnesses were culled to show the grounds upon which the application was made. On February 7th Mr. Fitzjames Stephen renewed his application for warrants against Colonel Nelson and Lieutenant Brand. Witnesses wore examined wiio deposed to having seen both defendants in London," and therefore in the jurisdiction of the Court, during the last few days. Sir Thomas Henry expressed himself satisfied on this point, and ordered that the warrants should be issued. Mr. Stephen said that the prosecutors were anxious to offer no indignity to the gentlemen whoso conduct was the subject of investigation ; and that, both in the mode of their apprehension and in the matter of bail he hoped no severity would be enforced which the law had power to Telax. On February S, Lieutenant Brand was had up at Bow-street Police Court, and charged with having signed an illegal sentence for the execution oi G. \V. Gordon. On the following day Brigadier-General Nelson surrendered at the same Court, on a similar charge. Both cases were remanded until February 10, each defendant being admitted to bail. On the day named both gentlemen again surrendered. As Mr. Bristowe, the -Admiralty solicitor, and Mr. Claude Scott, solicitor for the War Department, appeared for the respective defendants, it would seem that their defence is to be conducted by the Governmont. After some evidence had been taken, both officers were remanded, bail being taken for their appearance when called upon.—SomeZfeics.
