J Tho nova appears to have already affected the MolI bourne market.

The sharebrokera report the paßt week as ono of the most inactive of the year. An. unusually email amount of business was done, in fact scarcely anything but a few sales of bank stocks. In Commercials there has been a further improvement of 10s. Joint stocks have advanced to 12£, which maybe considerod the current rate. Bank of New South. Small lots of silk-dressed flour have been sold as high as £14, but £13 10s may Ic considered as a fair market price for trade parcels. 3ound samples of Californian, in quarter-sacks, have changed hands at £12 10s to £13; good Chilian is also firmer. Wheat remains steady, at last week's rates, with a full supply in the hands of millers. Other kinds of grain in fair demand. Sound tnaize, 2s 8d to 2s lOd, choice samples a shade higher. Sugars.—No sales of any consequence havo taken laco during tho week, and prices have not in any my altered. The market at Melbourne is reported asier. Teas.—lhe tendency of the market is to harden, specially as a large parcel of the Greyhound's cargo oes on to the Melbourne market. Two vessels, rhicli arrived from Hongkong via Melbourne, rought trifling parcels, the bulk of their freight being chow chow cargo. Low congous continue scarce, nd holders command their own prices. An extremely quiet day has passed in the import larkots; a good deal of this activity being, no oubt, due to heavy rain which set in at an early

" hour of the' day. In breadstuff's, no new feature of interest has transpired ; the value of flour is maintained unaltered, but the sale 3 effected partake too much of a retail character to be deserving of notice. Victorian continues to he quoted £11 to £11103; > and Adelaide is valued at £12 to £12 10s. We l learti from Messrs. Dnffield and Co., of Adelaide, • that steps are being taken to discover and bring to . justico the perpetrator* of the fraudulent attempt to • pass off inferior flour in another market, as their ' flour, by the forgery of their brand. Cornsacka are J again more inquired for, though the prices offering 1 do not as yet present much inducement to quit stock. , We quote 13s 5d to 13s 6d for Dundees. Fine . medium congous, in half-chests, have been placed at 2s in bond. We hear of a line of 100 barrels of moss f pork, for shipment, having been taken up at close on ' £5 10s, in band. Sales of "Vazey's new hams, ex Highflyer, are reported at 15Vd. The Neva Company annouuee a further reduction in the price of their candles to Is 3d. Hletne raisins, which have been very scarce of late, are offering at Bd, to land. . A parcel of Blood's stouC, for shipment, has been closed for at 9s in bond.—Argus, April 8. HOBAItT TOWN. Sales of general produce have been limited, and chiefly for home consumption. Flour is still quoted at from £10 to £10 10a, with a fair local trade at these rates. Wheat, 4s 2d to 4s 4d per bushel; sharps, from £6 to £7 per ton j bran, Is 2d per bushel.—Mcreury, April 4. TjAUNOESTON. We have no change to report in our quotations, flour remains steady at £.0 to £9 10s per ton; wheat, 3b 9d; oats, 2s Gd ; bran, Is per bushel; potatoes, £3 per ton, without bags; potted butter, wholesale, lOd to Is per lb, according to quality.— Cornwall Chronicle, April 6. ADELAIDE. The publishing by the Government of the agricultural statistics have had an improving effect upon the prices both of wheat and flour. It was generally anticipated that the average would have been higher, and that there would be more than 200,000 tons more available for export than now turns out to bo the case. Flour.—There has been considerable inquiry, and several hundred tons have changed hands at prices varying from £9 12s Gd to £10 10s per ton. To-day thete are buyers at £10 10s to £11 per ton for good brands, but the leading nailers are asking £11 10s to £12 per ton. Wheat.—There is absolutely none offering. There are a good many buyers at about 4s 2d to 43 3d per bushel, but this advance does not seem to satisfy sellers.—Register, April 1, ENGLISH MARKETS. Feb. 26. Our market remains very quiet, and but few transactions occur. In sorts wanted for immediate consumption, a few sales have been made at about last sale rates, but no quantity could be disposed of except ut a reduction, the anticipated large arrivals for March, coupled with quiet trade iu the Worth, causing consumers to buy very sparingly. The sales are fixed to commence on the 28th Feb., j arrivals to date being:—Sydney, 12,653 biles; Port L Philip, 31,20G bale 3 ; "Van Diemen's Land, 259 bales ; Adelaide, 5312 bales; Swan River, 805 bales; New | Zealand, 670 bales ; Cape, 30,067 bales; total, 81,000 bales. Some holders are sanguine that November prices . will ba fully maintained, an opinion not shared in by the trade, who look for a full decline of lid on all Port Phillip sorts. THE CORN TRADE. Mark Lane, Monday Afternoon, Feb. 25. J Last week's supplies were moderate. There were no cereal exports. English wheat up, 4,774 qrs.; foreign, 11,956 qrs. The show ot samples this morning from Kent and Essex was very short, yet great heaviness prevailed, and it was difKcult to make way at Is per quarter less money. The foreign trade was only retail, at n similar reduction, but floatiug cargoes sold very freely od holders accepting Is to 2s per qr. less, and some were withdrawn from 3alo. Country flour 22,GS 1 sacks; foreign, 1,473 sacks, 615 barrels. Though country descriptions were held occasionally at former rates, less monSy must have been taken to sell; the same may be said of all foreign qualities. Town prices were unaltered. English pea 9, 486 qrs ; foreign, none. Notwithstanding the short supply business was quiet. Linseed, 5,729 qrs ; exports, 800 qrs. Seed was a slow sale, but there was a fair demand for cakes. Iced clover Eeed sold very slowly for the time of year, the land still being wet. Tares, for the same reason, did not go off briskly, and other seeds were dull.

EASTERN MARKETS. The Calcutta Englishman of March 6th reports • We have no improvements to notice in 'Z. either in prices or demand. ° ar > Saltpetre continues in the fame state as befow and prices keep firm at o rupees. Rice—Business in table kinds lias taken pW some extent for Great Britain, at a slight reduot;™ on previous rates. Ballam is also lower a W o annas per md. Present quotations are Bs 2-S tn o\f, for Kahree, and 2-13 to 3 for Ballam. " 10 Castor Oil—For this article prices hare advance owing principally to the scarcity of seeds n,' business dono has therefore been somewhat limit*/? Prices range from 12-8 to 13-8. From Shanghai we learn that in teas a moderate business has been transacted, bat in consequence of the firmness of holders an advance of about one tael lias taken place on all kinds of black, and on the fine kinds of green. Goals had a downward tendency At Canton, the business done in tea 3 was limited At Hongkong Australian coals were worth 81 dollars to 9.V dollars a ton. Batavian advices to March Ist report the departure of the Ystroom. and Amycus for Sydney, with 780 tons of sugar ; and the Netherlands and Elizabeth, for Melbourne, with 1185 tons sugar, 153 tons rice, and 2 tons rattans. Rice was quoted at lower rates, sugar scarce and higher. Coffee market bar.> Freights improving. No transactions in Australian coal. At Manila the latest sales of coal were at 9 dollars from ship's tackles. The Lobelia had sailed for Sydney with 17,400 piculs of sugar, 520 piculs o£ coffee, and 81 piculs of coffee. The Ocean, for Melbourne, took 2929 piculs hemp, 3700 taels sugar, 10i mils cigars, 154 piculs cordage. Nothing loading for the colonies. Shipments of sugar to Australia were 12,000 piculs in excess of those of the previous year. MAURITIUS. Sugar.—-Tlie markot is now without animation, and there is an absence of disposition to purchase at present prices. Holders, however, show firmness and decline to reduce quotations. The prices of white crystals and superior yellows given below are nominal :—Tesou No. 12 to IS, from 5 dollars 75 cents to 7 dollars; syrups, from 4 dollars to 5 dollars 25 cents ; finest white eryat ils over No. 20, 7 dollars 50 cents to 7 dollars 75 cents : yellow crystals, No. 1 7 dollars; very fine yellow, No, 1, counters, 0 dollars 75 cents to 6 dollars 90 cents ; good yellow, No. 2 ditto, 6 dollars 25 cents to 6 dollars 50 cents ; fiie yellow syrups, 5 dollars 90 cents to 6 dollars 10 cents good ditto, 5 dollars 50 cents to 5 dollars 75 cents ; low dark to fair rations 4 dollars 75 cents to 5 dollars 55 cents. Flour : Since our last report there have been received by Star of Hope, from Launceaton, 556 bags, which have fetched with difficulty 3.17J dollars per 100 lbs. It must be added that delivery has not yet been taken. The position has scarcely changed, and the price quoted above could not be obtained for a large quantity, it having only been realised through the requirements of millers. In general the market is inactive, owing to the large quantity of the article and of wheat on hand. Oats : Australian continue without change aS say 2 dollars to 2 dollars 25 cents per 100 lbs. Wheat: Since the last sales of about 8500 bags of Californian at 3.15 dollars to 3.25 dollars per bag only 1000 bags of the same have been sold at 3.25 dollars. The market is now steady with a considerable stock. There is on hand of different descriptions about sir months' consumption. Rain has fallen, but; only in partial showers. There has been enough to give activity to vegetation, but whatever may fall will not prevent a considerable reduction in next crop. There are some who do not estimate the next crop at more than 75,000 tons. Messrs. C. Daniel and Go. liave suspended payment owin<* to losses sustained on giain imported from India. "The effect lias caused a painful sensation. The Result has sailed for Sydney. The' Jessie Kellywas loading for the colonies.
