LATEST FROM MAKETU AND OPOTIKI.
FIGHT AT ROTORUA. The' Sturt' lias made three trips from Tauranga to Maketa and Opotiki since Saturday night last, conveying 250 Maori, and 150 of the European forces, Major McDonnell in command.
Two skirmishes had taken place near Maketu, one at Rotorua Lakes, and the other on the road. The last one took place on Monday, the 18th, when the Arawas lost one man killed, 2 wounded; the Hauhaus 1 killed, and 2 taken prisoners. The Hauhaus had destroyed nearly all the friendly natives' crops, but Major McDonnell was rapidly _ following them up with his band, and it was expected would soon drive them inland.
A large party of armed Hauhaus having been seen prowling about in the vicinity of Opotiki on Saturday and Sunday last, it was deemed advisable to strengthen the garrison there; more of the Waikatoa were therefore put on pay, and sent on from Tauranga, and the Ist class militia called out.
The ' Fortune,' schooner, had got off the bar at Opotiki, but had received great injury.
