HARAPIPI.
(rROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT.) September 20. Ths detachment of the Ist Ticgiment (Waikato Militia) left hero this evening on route for Auckland per Government steamers Pioneer and Waipa. The detachments of the Ist at Alexandra and Hamilton aro also to go down, and tlie final destination of all is Taurauga and Opotifci, 1" believe, when they are at once to be placed on their land. There are r.o men 3n pav now at this fort, or any doing duty except the Scrgeant-'Mttjor of the Korest R-«iaer?. _ At present it is not known whether it is the intention of the 3-overnment to send anyone to garrison this pl'CO, it is cerKinlv not safe it left in its present state, is it. is one of the most exposed positions in the whole Waikato. It is about seven miles from Alexandra md four from Te Hori. and the number of settlers inlr amount to about twenty, and the head-q'iarters jf 'the rebels at Kawhia is only a short distance rom here. Mr. Weaver, the Chief Tmsjineer, has been up on he Wiiikat.-J, it was reported to inquire about the littVrent roads to be made, and also those most rquired. Several meetings were held at Alexandra, it which ir was expected he wo'.ld attend, hilt he ; lid not do so (from iu iispositioa it Was said), nuch to the disappointment of all the settlers. The | najority at all the meetings were in f.ivour of the oat between A'exandra and here as a beginning of he Raglan road. Unless something is done to find work for the men in the Waikato, in a very short time there will not le raanv left, as all ihose that can do so are selling ait and leaving for want of em doyment. The only dan is to commence road-making rt once, as there .re no men of caoital in the district to employ labor o any extent. If something is not dono, and that oon, the Waikato will soon bs depopulated. There are some unfounded rumours floating about s to gold being found in this Tieighbo.irhood. "From 11 I ean hear there is not a particle of truth in it, as t all oriiioated in a person showing some gold ob■lined atTHokitika, and sa> i iz, in a joke, that it was ound not three miles from her-"-. I should be one of he first to report such a fact if it was the case, but I m sorry to say it is not. Murine the'past week wc have had tho Waipa. i.s., the G-ymnotus, s.s., and the Pioneer. p s., up he'river—the latter for the purpose of taking down he troops from here and Alexandra, nnd oil the loyal Artillery from Te Awamutu. The weathsr since mv List has been very linnetled plenty of rain and high wind ; but, notwithtandin» all. farm work is being pushei ahead by he fe\v~settlers that are in this little settlement. One company of the 57th is also going down from | I'a Awamutu to garrison Auckland.
