RECENT FIRE IN SYMONDS-ST.
A oiiext number of persons during the course of yesterday visited the scene of he recent confla<ration at the top of bynionds-stri et. II e cap left by the total destruction of eleven houses is verv wide and looks exceed.n ? ly sombre, nothing but the black cinders remaining of what was heretofore comtortaole and ek„ant looking homesteads. One of the greatest sufferers by this fire will be Miss lalbot a governess. This lady had only recently urm.he. her house, aud set up a school- One o:I t houses was occupied by a iirs. Creamer , fortunately, her iurmtnre «:s saved but ha= suffered some damage, ilie ljuly is in..ured fo £30 against furniture in the ?* ew Zealand I"- 11 " j ranee Company. There does not appear to be anv doubt that the lire originated in Mr. KeVell's houses. The rumour that was circulated as to the policy of insurance expiring on Saturday is incorrect. It was the builder s risk winch expired on Saturday afternoon. The actual loss of property i s S r^ ac ' variably computed at trom f 1000 to tom. The insurances are. however, heavy, biu do not cover the value of the property injured or destroyed. The following are the amounts insured in the various offices :
Four liousos belonging to Mr. !Revcl, £600 in ilie Auckland. „ }f r . Craig's workshop. in the occupation ot Messrs. Carson and McCulsky, £"100 in the London. Liverpool and Globe. Also three houses on the north side ot the ■workshop, £600 in the Loudon, Liverpool and G-lobe. . Mr. Otway's house, which was occupied by .Mrs. Creamer, was not insured. Mr. Williamson's house, £100 in the ]NTortheru. Porter's cottage, £250 in the Liperpool. The origin and cause of the fire is being investigated bv the police, and we understand that an inquisition will be taken when they .shall have made their report. We regret to state that the fire was not unattended by accident. When it became a question of pulling down one of the houses, a young man, named John .1 >arron. formerly f. waterman, now a labourer, volunteered to go on to the roof of the house and fix the grapnel. He succeeded in reaching the top of the house, but the shingles "boinq -wot. Llo elippod Olid foil frQ-na a Koia;Ut of m »arly 30 feet, sustaining a compound fracture of the arm, above the wrist. The poor fellow is thrown out of work in consequence of this accident. Might not the companies start some fund bv which the suffering caused in this way could be partially relieved ?
