TAURANGA.

(FBOM OUR OWN COBRESPONBEITT. On tho aTival of the mail steamer Lord Ashley from Auckland, Te Papa exhibited unusual animation and bustle from the circumstance of the arrival, oy that vessel, of several of the purchasers at the recent land sale. Occupant 9 who were not purchasers commenced at ones to remove their shantys, and the theatre and billiard room were, in defiance of the purchasers of the sites on which they stood, removed in a twinkling. His Worship tho Resident Magistrate was appliod to, but his opinion, it is 6aid, wa3 not in accordance with the reply of Dr. Pollen at the sale. Be this as it may, there was scarcely a stick standing on the ground a few hours after tho socalled purchasers arrived. I mentioned in my last, communication that alet v er from Wi Tamihana had been banded to tho purveyors, ordering them off tho land they were then surveying to the place where the blood was spilt. Matters were brought to a climax on Sunday last, the natives, having seized all the surveyors' instiuments, but did not proceed to violence, not oven touching the store?. Thompson's re*«ons for thus acting are that instead of 50,000 tho surveyors have taken some 55,000 acres, and his excuse for acting thus summarily, is ib.it the seat of Government is too far distant, that to communicate with his Excellency at Wellington would bo pure waste of time. I have, however, alreidy transmitted to you full particulars of this affair through another hannel. . The following notice referring to the occupation of lands, was posted on the mo»t conspicuous places on the beach during the week, but was torn down, I am informe 1 , by Colontl Harrington, Ist Waikato Begimeut:—

" Camp Te Papa, " Tauranga, Sept. 18t!6. " A public meeting of tho privates of the Ist Waikato Regiment will be held at, 2.30 p.m , at tho Regimental rJchool-room, on the 20th instant., for the purpose of considering as to whether otlieers and non-commissioned officers are entitled to ' priority of choice/ according to tho tho terms of our agreement." The meeting took place as announced, but was adjourned to a future day. The particulars I have not succeeded in obtaining. Another untimely death has occurred at the Gate Pa. One of the Ist Waikatoß, named John Bryce, was discovered suffocated from the effects of drink. A Coroner's inquest was held, and a verdict in accordance with the fact returned. The weather has been exceedingly boisterous for some time past —the wind being mostly from the eastward. The Sea Belle put in hero on Tuesday night, bringing with her Maj->r St. John and four Ist Waikato men. These passengers were on their way from Opotibi in the Hira, which vosaol having reached the slipper where tho Sea Belle wa* lying windbound, Major St. John, preferring the latter, came on in her as before-3tated. The Sea Belle proceeded on her voyage to Napier on Thursday. The Hope arrived yesterday from Opotiki, and the Mavis is from the same place this morning. The vessels now in harbour are :—Schooners Tauranga, Hope, Mavis, Hira, and Onward ; cutters Whitby, Bella, Three Si.ters, and Hazird, and one or two others, the names of which I havo been unable to get at. Greet dissatisfaction is exhibited by tho Arawas at the continued blockading of Matata and Maketu, many of them being actually starving, not being able to get the necessaries of life, which they attribute eolely to the fact of these places being closed again st legitimate trade. It is said that the exportation of flax alone frora Matata would go far to mitigate the Bufferings of which they complain.
