(FEOil OtTR OWX COUUESPON'DENr.) Ik my last I informed you that the store of Mr.. Stephenson had bean hroken into and robbed; and that ai warrant w/aa out for the apprehension of. the suspected party. On tho 25 th inet. he was brought down, accompanied by numerous friends, who wished to Bottle: tho matter' out of court; this; <of. course, could not be done, and he was brought beforie-: K> G. Barstow, Esq., R.M., and 'tyo Native Assessors, who, on hearing the case, committed the prisoner. Hemi Pu, for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme . Court in Auckland. The prisoner's friends said they would not, let him. go to prison, but were willing to pay any. .fine the Bench would order. I. believe they offered:£46; ... On the Resident Magistrate ordering constable • Jt'Cabe and the Karere in attendance tii reinoye the. prisoner to the gaol, a scuffle ensued, \yhen the p'ri- ; sbner was rescued by his friends/and as there were so many it could not be prevented. I suppose the Resident Magistrate will report thecase to the Government. It is to be hoped. tbiat: they may be able to: get possession of .the man ;. it would: be a lesson to the Maoris, who am rsidy enough to availthemselves of Engliah.law when they can gain.anything by it, but are determined is shall not effect, them the other way.
