The deceased man tried to get on. board the, steamer Prince Alfred, but the man pn YFUtcli would not allow him. V About 10 p.m. the men on board the Prince; Alfred heard a. cry, and on running on deck, the deceased was seen in the water close along/ side the .stream. Ropes were thrown Jtb Mm' and a life buoy, but lie seems to have. been, unable to catch hold of either. A boat was at once manned. Captain. Parcjuhar, of the steamer Prince Alfred, went in. search of deceased, but.saw. nothing; of him. The tide was flowing very strong, at, the., time, and the body* no doubt* was carried : a long way up the harbour.. : ...- The deceased was a married man; and we. understand his wife is at Wanganui. The body; has not yet been recovered. A man named John Whelan, a private! in; the Military Train, was apprehended by the police yesterday morning on two charges of'larceny;; one for stealing a bundle of clothes from .pn. board the Prince Alfred steamer, the other fbir stealing some articles of clothing, and an American axe from Mr. Jackson, of this town.
