The steerage is roomy and very lofty, being eight feet in the clear between the decks, arid is well ventilated, and contains every convenience.. It contains a special saloon for ladies, .accommodating 37 in number, whilst the open cabin is licensed to carry 114 adults. Making a total licensing capacity in this steamer of 370 passengers. The ' South Australian' is also one of the best cargo ships of her tonnage, being equal to SOO tons of weight and, measurement on a draught of; 13ft; 6in.; this is exclusive of 130 tons of coiU. carried in blinkers. The houses oil deck are especially keptap&rfc for the officers and engineers of the steamer; and are ample for their requirements. The steamer is fitted up with two steam winches Eor discharging cargo, worked, separate from the main boiler; and has also distilling apparatus, capable of producing 1000 gallons per day.
