AN EXPLANATION.

To the Editor of the New Zealand Hbbald. Sib, —At the late meeting: of the Diocesan Synod, a series of resolutions were brought forward by the Revl F. Gould,'haying reference to th« temporary delay in the payment of salaries of teachers under the Board of Education. To the third of these resolutions I moved an amendment, which I afterwards withdrew, as it was evidently not the wiih of the Synod to do more at present than ask for a continuanee of the grant in the old way and at the old rates. Conversing a day or two ago with a teaoher under tho Board, he told me that he and others had gathered from the words of my amendment, that I was opposed to making any effort to obtain for the teachers that which was already overdue to them. ■ I was much astonished at such ap interpretation of my meaning ; hut as it is possible that others have received the same impression, I shall be much obliged to you if you will allow me to say that I had no such intention ; so far otherwise, that oae of my main reasons for bringing hastily forward an amendment to Mr. Gould's third resolution, was a fear, lest by assenting to it we should practically declare ourselves contented with the low ecale of remuneration hitherto granted. As for arrears due to teachers under tho Board, it never occurred to me that any , one could fnr a moment look upon them as other than their clear legal right—l am, &c, B. Thohhtok Dtohsy.
