AUCKLAND DISPENSARY.

Tiib annual meeting of the subscribers to this institution was held yesterday, at the Mechanics' Institute. Mr. William Rattray in the cliair. Mr. Buchanan, lion. Secretary, read t,ho minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEU. Mr. Buchanan- read the following roport of the committee :■— " Report of the Comniittoe for tho year onding 3lst December, 1885, presented to tho subscribers at the annual general meeting, hold on the 25th January, IS6G. "Jn presenting to the subscribers th> ir report for tho past- year, tlic Committee of the Auckland Dispensary havo ng:iin to call attention to tho great benefits nnd advantages which Iho institution continues to afford to the sick and destitute poor, tho number of applicants for relief during tho last twelve months beinc; in excess of nny previous year. " To meet the increasing requirements of the Dispensary, your Committee made application to the Provincial Government for a further contribution towards tho funds of the institution, ani they havo much pleasure in being able to state thai in answer to that appeal an additional sum of £50 was placed upon ' the estimates by his Lfonor the (then) Superintendent, and voted hv the Provincial Council. " Your Committee havo also the pleasure to state that owing to the strenuous exertions of the Hon, Treasurer and Hon. Secretary tho list of subscriptions has boen largely increased, and they tru=t that during the ensuing twelve months the liberality of tho public will grant them a still greater amount of support. " J'n accordance with a resolution pissed at tho last annual g.neral meeting, your Commit'ee havo to report that they have made an addition of £50 pei annum to the remuneration of the medical oflicer, and vour Committee have further to roport that in consequence of tho increaso in the number of prescriptions they havo also mado an addition of twenty guineas per annum to tho salary of the dispenser. " From tho accompanying veport of your medical oflicer, it will be seen that his duties, as well as those devolving on ISTr. Welsman, the compounder of the medicines, "re daily becoming" more o:ierous. "The financial statement of your Hon. This hai been caused partly by the arrival of largo number: and partly by the scarcity of employment which lias existed 1 it-oly, wherebv many whe HP' usually W")i able to pay for medical attendanci have been deprived of the means of doing so, anr have; consequently obliged to apply us patient: at the Dispensary; and in this way, no doubt, alargf amount of distress litis been obviated, which would otherwise iiavo been felt severely by this class ol persons. There has been no severe outbreak of any epidemic disease during the p<ist year, although then havo been several eases of typhoid fever. Dysentery has been common, and diseases of the mucous membrane, as bronchitis and diarrhoea* have been very prevalent. At the e irly part or' thy year diarrb(Ot of a most severe character prevailed, chiefly amor.gsl children recently arrived in this country, the disease having in many c»si s originated on board ship,attri bufable. no doubt, to want of proper ventilation anc the use of improper diet. The other diseases whicl have come under tr-atment havo been of the usua' character, and require no particular mention.
