CITY BOARD MEETING.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Board was he.'d in tho Commissioners' Offices, Canada Bui'dings, yesterday afternoon, at three o'clock. There wore present—Mr. J. W. Bain, Chairman; Messrs. George, H. Asliton, W. Swanson, Wiigley, D. Graham, Slater, and Turnbull. Tho minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and tho Secretary read the correspondence which ho had sent arising out of tbe proceedings of thb preceding meeting. HATES. It was announced that the amount of rates collected since last meeting amounted to £233 9s. 6d. MINUTES OF APPEAL Co.IfMITTEE. The minutes of tho Appeal Committee woro read and approved of. city rUMT. Tbo following tenders for the repairs of the city pumps for one year were then opened: — Archibald McPherson, £18 for the whole. Alexander Tait, £4 19s. each pump Viefeery & Masefield, £5 each pump. On the motion of Mr. !>'. Gkaham, seconded by Sir. J. Georuk, the tender o? Mr. Archibald McPherson was accepted. ALTEN HOAI>. Mr. Wiuglf.y moved the following resolution :— " That Alton Road be formed and metalled and continued to Stanley-street, the full width of the street adjoining Stanley-street according to the permanent level." Ho said the motion had been pas;ed a twelvemonth ago, and tho work never beon performed. It would be a great advantage to (ho neighbourhood and would coat very little. Mi-. D. Geaiiam said he had great pleasuro in seconding the resolution, as it would ho a work of groat utility and would not bo a very great expense. The corner of Mten Road and Sfcanley-streot was in a very dangerous s f .;te, and the sooner it was done the bettor. Mr. Swajtson would like to know how much it would cost. Mr. WniGLEY said that was tli" only work which would have been done in tliat part of tho city, and the rate paid by the inhabitants would more than pay for it. Mr. Asiiton said if the work was of such great utility and was to cost bo littlo ho would support tho motion. Mr. George said as it had laid over so long, it could do no harm to lot it lie a little longor until they got moro funds. Mr. Geobgf. moved as an amendment that tlie Foreman of "Works bo instructed to make an estimate of tho cost, and to report on tho matter next sittingday. Mr. Asiiton seconded the amendment. The amendment was put and carried. STANLEY-STIIEET DRAIN". Mr. Wrigi.ey moved, that tho drain in Stanloystreet bo repaired and cleaned. Ho said it was necessary that this dram should be cleaned out until they cou'd get a flush of water, but at that level there was no water to be had. It was very deleterious to tho health of the 'nhabitants to have tho drain in the state it now was, in consequence of tho quantity of stagnant matter which had accumulated in it. The Foreman of "Works s 'd that it had been r leaned out six weeks ago. Mr. Guaiiam thought thero were many other drains that required more attention than this one— the Ligar canal, for instance. Mr. TuENiiffiiL s :conded the motion. Mr. Gbobge said that a gre.it portion of tho drain waß on Government ground, and they paid no rate for it. Mr. D. Graham said that tho drain wa3 a private property. The Board ought to find out who made that drain, and see that they kept it eloan. The Foreman of Works said that two men could clean it out in three days. On the motion of Mr. Swanson, it was ordered that the Foreman of Works bo instructed to examine and report on the matter. Several accounts were then pasaotl, and the meeting terminated.
