MARKET ACCOMMODATION.
This subject is too important to be allowed to sink out of sight. The want of a market is felt, the great obstacle to one being provided it is often alleged is want of funds. With respect to the latter we have a suggestion to make lor the consideration of the City Board, who allege want of money as the reason of not providing a market. Mr. Hardington's yard seems very suitable for the site of a market, and could be turned into one at a small expense. There is a large area of ground, there are no less than three present entrances, and a fourth could easily be made, so that it would have very ample means of egress and ingress. The stalls on each side and at the end could easily be converted into stalls for the sale of vegetables, :md the buildings, the ollices erected would do admirably for market offices or for f.hops. The central situation of the yard is well known, and its convenience in having so many entrances would be great. The area is suificient for both a wholesale and retail vegetable market, and probably for a hay and straw market; while some of the offices we have named could at a slight expense be converted into a corn market. It seems to us that if funds cannot be got to erect even such a market as we have before recommended, it would at least do no harm if a deputation of the City Board waited upon Mr. Hardingtoii, and discussed with him the terms on which his premises could be converted into a market. They might either be rented, or a certain guarantee might be given to Mi'. Hardington in aid of the rental received from tenants, providing these were below a certain amount. We do no more, however, at present than throw out the idea for general consideration, and especially for the consideration of the City Board.
