PANMUR AND MOUNT WELLINGTON DISTRICTS.
A 31EF.T1NO of persons interested in the repair of tlio roads in tlio above districts, was held yesterday evening at tlie Panmure Inn. About forty perFOiiß were present. Mr. JitEiAM) was called to the chair, lie stated that the object of the meeting, was to consider a letter reteived by the Chairman of tho Board of Highways Trustees, Mount District, and lie had "no doubt the Panmure Borad had received a similar rommnnication. The letter was as follows ; — " Superintendent's Office, "Auckland, 20tli May, ISGB '' Sir, —I have the honor to inform you that, in addition to any grant tho Provincial Government may make towards the repairs of roads, I am able to render further assistance to the Board by placing at its disposal immigrants to any number the Board •may desire, on the following conditions,iz. : — " That the Board will supervise tho immigrants so pbeed at their disposal, lind tlieni in rations and liouso acconunodaticn. " The Provincial Government will find them in tools and wages. " Should such an arrangement meet with your approval, an early reply will oblige. "I have, &c„ "James H. Crawford, " In absence of the Superintendent." The Cjiaibman said that considering the present state of the roads in tho Mount Wellington and Panmure districts, everyone resident in those district must feel interested in having them repaired. It remained for tho meeting to consider the advisability of accepting his Honor's offer. After ii desultory discussion, during which great dissntisfactn n was expressed as to the extent- to which the roads had been cut up by private individuals, tho following resolution was moved by Mr. Hoiiei:n, seconded bv Mr. Ghohoe Jrf.i.anp, and carried by a large majority—" That this meeting memorialize tho Superintendent to pay an cqniialont equal to the sum promised by the residents in these districts, foi the repair of tho roads." It was then proposed by Mr. Grow" .reland, seconded bv Mr. Hami.iS and cankoThat Messrs. Hepburn, Cockcrill, Howard, ITnuilm, aud Ireland do draw up the memorial, and present tho same to the Superintendent." The meeting was then canvassed to ascertain what each person present "would be willing to contribute, in labour or money, towards carrying out the necessarr repairs; after which the following resolution was moved by Mr. llami.in, seconded by Mr. Cr. Ireland, and carried —" That Messrs. Coclterel!, Ireland, and Reyburn bo appointed a Board to superintend and carry out tho work required for the remiir of tho roads." It was moved by Mr. Howard, seconded by Mr. G. Ireland, "That the off rof the Superintendent, relating to the labour of immigrants, be accepted, when labour, additional to the labour already ofi'ered, be required." After some further discission on the subject ol tne rate of payment for tho labour to be expended by the residents, The meeting adjourned.
