A fair extont of business has been done in the import market during the past month. The dvic s received by the October mails from England were not quite so favourable as those preceding, as they certainly show a larger amount of exports to this province than we were led to expect. The market is still heavily overstocked with most staple articles; therj are some few exceptions, which we shall more particularly mention. Our town and country trade continues good, especially the Waikato, which is daily inereafing in population, and thus forms an outlet for large quantities of goods which otherwise coull not easily be disposed of.
In general, prices have undergone very little fluctuation, and for the present we do not anticipate any change of any importance. Our readers willjind some alteration in the prices of several articles, -which is owing to tho unexpected increase of our tariff, which ciuno into operation on the Bth inst.
Flour, fee.—Sineo our last monthly report, advices received from the Australian colonies, that the price of flour there had, in consequence of heavy supplies received and anticipated, fallen considerably, no speculative purchases of anj" kind liuvo taken place. Importers at present ave unwilling to give way to tho extent required, and the business done has been very trifling, and prices are merely nominal. Sugar.—Tlic demand for this article exceeds our present stocks, and until further supplies come to hand, prices will run high. Company's No. X, to 5j5 (Melbourne preferred) ; Y, 4:f to <H-; Mauritius crystals, sjj (o . r i£; Manilla, M. 0., 4J. Duty paid.
Tea.—Thero lias been a fair business dono in good congous, which are always readily saleable in halfchests or chests. Low qualities aro unsaleable, tho market being perfectly glutted.
Coffee.—We have onl)' a very trifling improvement to report in this article, a very considerable parcel has been re-shipped to Sydney, and stocks are gradually becoming more in proportion to our consumption. Oilmen's Stores.—Thoro is little to report in these articles, nothing beyond the usual trade demand having existed. 6ome ailicles have been more enquired for than others, (us goods required for Christmas consumption.) In general wo do not know of any important chango having taken place. Alo and Porter. —The, news of short shipments from home, ha<l some influence on this mr.rkot, and an advance of OS. per lihd. for bulk ah; and porter, uik' about Gd. per doz. in glass, luis taken place. Several very considerable parcels liavo been placed among the trade, and wa believe that at present there arc no large parcels in first hands. Wines and Spirits.—Wo cannot c|uoto any alteration in tho prieo of wines and spirits generally. Our consumption during tho latter part of the month, owing to the holidays, has been somewhat larger, but the trado having been mostly supplied at auction, the increased consumption has not occasioned any advance in price. Tobacco and Cigars.—Business during the month has been limited to small trade sales, 10s and good twist tobacco arc most saleable, but our present supply far exceeds our consumption. In cigar:: there has been haidly anything doing. AUCKLAND CATXX,E MARKET. A 1 F.:l D MJCKLAXn'S "WKEKI.Y JIKI'OUT. Tlicic lias loon no improvement in the price of horse s'.oik during the past week ; inquiries are very limited, and owners of good animals keep them back from the market. There has bet n some improvement in the prices obtained lor cattle. Many buyers in the out districts
aro in tho market, and Auckland-bred world: ; oxen, <Xnc 3 oung cows, and heifers, are in request, fitters are comparatively dull of sale. Dairv cows "are cnquired for, but none of good quality are offering. Fat cattle have not offered bo plentifully, and though prices can scarcely bo quoted higher, there is a firmJbo market wl.icl! indicates a pmspcct „f rates br-mg obtained. he demand for store sheep continues. 13 v<f ii much inquired for, but none aro offering. Fat sheen " ere " l fair S'ipply; 344 were penned, an.l dl sold at an advance of about -Is. per head over l .at week's quotations. Lambs wore plentiful, but held their placo ; they brought from 18s. to 375. Gd. cach. A small market of pigs of good qnality met with week's s ' low ' n S n( > improvement on last
MESSIts. HUNTER & co.'s WEEKLY KEI>OItT. veno f h ?m NTE , K & Co - (late Styafe & Hunter), rcpoit that they have done a fair amount of business us week, both in the cattle and horse market. At c .Newmarket Sale Yards, a lot of steere and hciters, tho property of Messrs. T. & C. Shepherd, were sold at an average price of £7 per head. " at bullocks are much the same priee as last week. Medium quality ranging about £14 per head ; dairv cows ol good quality, market barely supplied: inerior qualities have fotehed £11 to £12 per head; 'a none in the market, except of inferior quality: working bullocks are in demand, and would sell readily at £30 to £40 per pail*. l' at Sheep.—Market lias been rather bnro of good qualities, and have sold a shade lower than last week, ranging from 24s to 37s a head, but really nothing iirst-class offering ; fat lambs sold from 20s to 275, but not of first, qualities ; 300 Sydnev store slieep have been sold at 19s to 20s each. v ? r! J C 3' birge show of horses appeared in our a : ,l3t lv cek, which were mostly disposed of at. lair prices, considering tho description ot' stock, consistuig chielly of hacks and light harness horses of uilmor quality. A lot of 22 head, from Poverty Bnv, realised satisfactory prices.- hacks, from £8 to £20 ; one uiedium draft horse fetched £14. A lot, from tho , y ol 1 lenty, found buyers at fair prices, .tlio (lesei'iptio'n consisted of hacks and medium draft horses. Royal Artillery horses averaged f 8 15s per head. We have still to remark a dullness ill the Jiorse trade, but the class of stock generally offering is very inferior. AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHARE MARKET Mil. 11. i\ staHk's IIEI'OKT. A very limited business has been doiio in the share market, during tho holidays. Bank of New Zealand shares have passed at £4 los pni., being a reduction of 5s since my hist report, tho demand still remains dull. Bank of Auckland are firm and enquired after al 10s pm., but very few sellers. New Zealand insurance shares have advanced £2 per share, business having been dono at £20 per share.
