The s.s. Albion left Lyttelton at 7.48 p.ir. on Fr 1 " day, nnd nrrived at Port CluOn ors on Saturday at 1.12 p.m. Ilnd fine -weather, with I'plit variable winds during tho jinssnpe. In reportincr by telegraph the result of the trial of speed between this vessel snd the Otngo. n mistake oecured. Instend of n difference of minutes Votwern the vessels, on Thursday morning it should have been 2-' f miles, or neeordinc to the fnet, freni tlueo to four miles, th Albion being that distnnco ahead, nt. dnylight on Thursdnv. The moo through'ut seems to ho a very equal one, making it a matter of difficulty to discover a superiority in either of tho boats, whieli with the N Z.S.N. Company's steamer Wellington, ate among the finest and fastest heats in the colonie?. At nine o'clock on the right of starting, the Albion was about one mile and a-lialf astern of tho Otngo ; at 11 p.m. she was abreast her: nnd at 2.30 n.m. on Thursday the Otncro bore P.S.W.. about four miles nstem. Subsequently, the Otngo gained on the Albion, and as previously reported, nnived slightly ahead of her— time 5} minutes. Had the distance nt the end of the l ace been greater, it is believed the two vessels would have nrrived simultaneously. The speed was not unusual, tho passage occupying from 4.23 p.m. to 9.45 a.m.. which exceeds the time taken by the Albion on her previous trip.—Doihj Tiwm, Dee. 3. Tnn Otaoo anii tiik Ai.iion. —These two fine steamers had another trial of speed on Thursday last. They both left Otaeo together nt about twenty minutes past four o'clock in the afternoon and they passed Port Chahuers Heads at ten minutes to five, the All ien slightly lendinc. During tho night the Albion obtained considerable advantage, being nt one time near four mi : es ahead, but on passing Akaron Heads at lialf-pnst six next moi ning, the Otago wns the leading boat about some two hundred yards, and on reaching Addorly IT end she was hading hv over one mile ; on reaching Officer's Point, at forty-five minutes past nine, a.m., the Albion was gradually overhauling her; she passed Officer's Point exactly six minutes after the Otngo firrd her gun. The distance is over 195 miles and was dono in seventeen hours, less a few minutes, by the Otago. The St. Kilda, schooner, Cnpt. Rodgers arrived in port on Saturday morning, after a passage of 30 days lrom the Islands Aitntuka and Rorotonpa. Left Nov. 4th, nnd met with light winds nnd calms during the greater part of the | nssnge. Experienced five successive S.F. gales, nft< r sighting the New Zealand coast. The St. Kilda is a smart looking little craft, nnd has been in tho fruit trade for a long tin.e, along with the schoorer Cornl Queen, a vessel that puid us a visit last a ear with a similar cargo, nnd from the same group of the South Sea Islands. The cargo of the St. Kilda comprises a huge quantitv of otnngr-s, bananns, eoconnuts, 1.11 d pinc-a] pits.— Lyttel'o 11 Times, Dec. 6.
The Babqve Ai.eeta.—Tho Amcricnn barque £le<ta, Captain Gallison, is P2G tons register: lieowners are Messrs. Pack ard Church, of New Tor'-. She originally arrived at Melbourne from that port after a fair passage of 9G days, with 1,100 tons enrgo. The Aleeta has since been engaged in the cnttle trade, for which she is admirably adapted. She was first chartered to make three trips from Twofold Bay to Bluff Harbour with cattle, which she accomplished altogether in three months and twenty days. One V ivage from Twofold Bay to Blntl"Harbour and back was performed in the unprecedented period of 19 davs, the quickest voyage ever made. After performing the contract, Captain Gallison again entered into a charter with Messrs. Dodds and Thompson, of Melbourne, to convey cnttle from this port to Auckland. One voyage was inidw there and back in 21 days, and another in 23 days ; the average loss out of the five trips was little less than four per cent.. At the present time she is chartered to make three trips to Auckland with CaUle ; one of them is now completed. She left here with 26C head of cattle, arrived nt her destination with 202, and returned to Newcastle in 30 days in nil. She started on her second trip on Thursday, with 2fio head for Auckland. Tho capabilities of the Aleeta for the accommodation of cattle, both on deck and below, are scarcely to be excelled, and she is in every way qualified for tho service in which she is employed. — A"<vcu.itlc C/troniclr, December 3.
The barque Ann Melliuish, Captain Williams, left this port on Friday, laden with Cfal, and the next day encountered the full effects of the gale. The vessel having been sighted at the flag-staff yesterday morning, tl.e 'steamer I'ungaice wns dispute!)ed to render any assistance that might be required. Tho captain rcpoifed that he was anxio 11 to enter the harbour, if possible, and that the vessel had sustained no further injurj-than toa portion of her bulwarks, which weie stove in, and the longboat also. It was not deemed prudent, for the vessel to enter the harbour, as there was a heavy sea 011 the bar, and she stood eft' and on during the dav.— A'rirciisf/t Ctirovir/r, Nov. 30.
On Sunday afternoon, a schooner, bound for this poit, entered the bight, and some ftnrs were entertained that she would go ashore. The wind, however, proved in her favour, nnd she succeeded in veering round and getting out of the danger. The schooner then proceeded in the direction of l'ort Stephens. It was impossible to tell the vessel's name, but it is surmised to be either the Scotia or the Itavcn.—J bid.
Tho galo extended along the const, and was severely experienced offSydnev, and to the southward. The schooner Tiger, lying at Bellambi, had to slip her moorings on Saturday morning, and put out to sea, and was met by the steamer Breadalbane beween Dolroyd and Middle Head, and towed to a safe anchorage.—J bid.
Captain Hughes, of the schooner Thane of Fife, lurnishes the following particular!?:— Left Hellainhi at 9 o'clock on fc'aturdiiv in ballast, wind at t-outh with threatening went her; ran for Botany JJiiv ; outside saw pigs, poultry, butter kecs, and 'lie cask marked R. T. floating about; two of tie pigs were alive ; anchored on south side of Hot any Bay in three fathom? at two o clock; Alb oil, schooner, was theie at. anchor ; hailed and found she had 110 bout; on Sunday morning, at one, went on board of Albion to see if she wanted assistance, mid to learn if she had seen any wreck ; while on board a very heavy squall came on, and could not get back to my vessel; it continued blowing very hard from the south, and at ten o'clock saw my mate give the Thane of Fife a second anchor with long scope of chain ; at eleven o'clock the sea came in very heavy and she parted the starboard chain, after which she parted the port chain, carrying away the windlass ; the mate made sail on the vessel to try and bcaeh her on the south shore, but could not succeed, but beached her on Hie lee shore near Cook's liiver, with loss of boat. Mr. Eames, const waiter, stationed at Botany, states that, in searching along tho beach, he found the carcase of a boar pig in a little bay to the southward of Cape Hanks; it was branded J. C., and probablv formed a port ion of tho cargo sighted by tho Than Jof Fife — Ibid.
