" To (lie Editor of the Daily Southern Cross " Sin, —Perceiving in your Saturday's issue that un application to extend u publican's liccnse to the Pavilion Concert Room was refused on the ground ol unfairness to licensed houses in the vicinity, permit me to say, that while approving of the liench, all hough the application was made by a licensed hotel-keeper, I wish to call the attention of the authorities to the fact that every cafe, restaurant, eating or boarding house, (with few exceptions), breaks the Licensing Act by selling to its customers wines and spirits, ale and porter, to tlio injury of the legitimate trader, t-o openly is it done, that in some of the houses the articles aie publicly exposed on the shelves. " Whim it is considered that publicans can only sell in compliance with the Licensing Act, that in addition lo the license fee of £40 or £50 they | ay high rents, and often a large sum to commence wi;h, it is only fair that the law should be made suflieiently stringent to protect them from lliß illegal trade indulged in by proprietors of restaurants, and otlur gentry in the same line. "An infliction of the full penalty (see clause 38, Licensing Act) in every instance would, 1 think, liavu tho desired effect. " I ain, &c., " A Publican." £10 REWARD. WITH reference to tho above letter, I, tho undersigned, hereby oiler the above reward to any person furnishing proof that will lead to the conviction of the proprietor of any musical hall, cafe or restaurant, illegally selling spirituous or fermented liquors.
