NEW PLYMOUTH.
(FROM OL'U OWN (-OKItKsrONDKNT.) 12th November. On Saturday evening last this place was again the scene of total shipwreck. The ' Queen of Perth' was tho name of the vessel. Sho was a schoonor of >S'i tons, Garson, master, from Melbourne. During the two previous days the weather had not been verv mild, notwithstanding which, the 4 Queen of Perth' and the Storm Bird ' .succeeded in holding" to their anchors. : Saturday, however, proved too much for the former vessel, and about six o'clock her chain cable parted, and the unfortunate schooner was swept by wind ami surf on to the Long Kecf, where she quickly went to pieces. I am happy in being able to state that no lives vrrn lost. A large portion of the wreck and cm go \vw os : j own along the beach by next morning ; bo!M vr .• el iii»ci cargo were, 1 understand. insured. «>ii W t dnr.-day there was a full parade of the tr-'ops of the line here, and a Koyal ealute was fired at tho regular hour in honour of the anniversarv oi Llis Koyai Highness the Prince of Wales. ".Not the slightest, demonstration was made by the people, who have little inducement for joy t ill display :il present. A more loyal community than that ot 'i'alaiiaki dot's not exist, in tlio llritish possessions, :uul yet, even this feeling, which is almost inseparable Iroiii t}io character of nil Kngli-hman, is chilled bv tho blighting intluenee of Unit worse than worthless Governor, Sir George Grey. The writ lor the election of a member to serve in tho General Assembly, in the place of Mr. Tuiton, only arrived on the Oth instant, and the nomination is advertised i'or the lKth, and tho polling dav, should a poll be lequired, for the 10th. Tn the event of a contest, this will prevent our third member i'rom taking liis seat for several days after the opening of . the Assembly, as the mail steamer ■will not'K ■ive here until the 23ril. This is unfortunate, as, no doabt, the first few days will be eventful. It is generally supposed that his Honor the Superintendent will come forward, in which ease it is not anticipated that there will be any opposition. The .*55,000 guarantee by the General Government for L'nblio Works in this Province have not vet been commenced to bo expended. A Select Committee of the Provincial Council appointed to report on the subject, advised that a portion of the sum should be devoted to retaining at least one company of the Forest Rangers for tho purpose of affording protection to those settlers who desired to proceed with their fanning operations within the line of block houses. So entirely did his Honor concur with this suggestion of the committee, that he urged upon the General Government the necessity of keeping both companies of the .Hush Party under payment and active service. blisters have, however, deciiucd to make anv alterations in the conditions under which the loan was guaranteed, and which do not provide for retaining th 0 services of the Bush I'arty. Ktitiiours have been rife during the last few days of some ilagrant cases of sticking up and robbery with violence in the streets of Xew Plymouth. The Police records do not contain any notice of such ollenecs, so that the reports may be fairly put down as untrue, indeed, as a general rule, everything is remarkably orderly and quiet, considering the circumstances of the Province.
