[FKOM OTJK OWN COERESI-ONDENT.] • October 24. A most deplorable accident happened hero on Thursday last, which unfortunately had a fatal termination. A young man named George "Witlings, residing with Mr. T. Wilson, at 'Okite, was, in company witli the son of tho latter, endeavouring to catch a young calf that had broken away from tho farm. It would appear that tho animal was rather wild, "broke from its pursuers, and made its cseapc to tho other side of the Okite Biver, at a noint very near tho falls. At this juncture Mr. "Wilson's son Tan to the farm, closo at hand, to procure a horse. 'On his return, his Info companion was nowhere to be found. Alarmed, lie hastened back to the house, and a search ivas at onco instituted, which ended, fruitlessly, no trace being discovered till later in the evening, when the hat of the unfortunate man was discovered on the beach, leading to the conclusion that he had been drowned. Next morning the search was renewed, and tho river dragged below tho falls, and eventually tho body was found at a point a fow yards further down. Nothing is known as to how ilio deceased met his death. It can only be inferred that, during the absenco of Mr. Wilson's son, he attempted to cross tho river to get the dog from the calf, by which it was being worried, and in so doing lost his footing, and was carried over the tails, a depth of between III) and 40 feet at the time, and Avas drowned. An inquest was held on the body on Friday, conducted by Dr. Harrant, coroner. 'The finding of the jury was in accordance witb the evidence at command—" Death oy drowning, f\\c result of accident."
