AN INCIDENT OF THE GATE PAH AFFAIR.
It is alw ays a pleasure to us to chronicle anecdotes of personal bravery exhibited by either privates or ollieers, especially those of so distinguished a regiment as the 43rd. The following is from the mouth of private Martin Walsh, of 2so. U Company of the J3rd regiment, who is lying in the hospital seriously wounded, and who states that ho owes his liie entirely to the bravery of Captain Sargent. AVe believe that the man, Lampett, mentioned below, has been recommended for the Victoria Cross, and we would ask, also, wlij r lias not the gallant captain been recommended for the same honorable distinction ? Wo let the man speak for himself. Private Martin Walsh, iNo. 9 Company, (the late Captain Muir's.) 43rd regiment, has made the following statement to our informant, for whose veracity we can vouch. On the evening of April 28th, in the hours between <1 and 5 25.ni., we were ordered to storm the Gate Pah. At the time we ascended the hill I was wounded within five yards of the pah. I remained there for ten minutes or a quarter of an hour, when I heard my commander in the rear shouting " They are tomahawking the Colonel inside and the other wounded ollieers. This was said by our own men who were retiring. Upon this I tried to rise, but fell, having a severe wound in the leg. I turned on my back and rolled about thirty yards, when I saw Captain Sargent about twenty yards in rear of me. I asked him for the love of God to help me to the rear, as I was badly wounded. He did come to help me, although under a heavy lire at the time. He was assisted by Private Lainpeth, of the J3rd regiment. These two carried me to the roar in safety, and to this act of bravery alone I attribute the fact that my life has been saved. I =
