DESPATCH.

Copy of n. Despatch from the .Right Honourable Kdward Caldwell, M.l'., to Governor 6ir George Grey, K.C.ii. Downing-strcet, Juno 27, ISGt. Sa:, —I encloso the copy of u letter which I have received from tho "War .Department. 1 do not at all doubt tho wisdom of the measures which have beta adopted on the recommendation of the Deputy Commissary General. Jjnt. i. regret to inf.r I'rom it that some months may elapse belore General Cameron id able to withdraw his troops from tho advanced position which they now occupy. J lake ibis opportunity of repenting the earnest hope, w.iich I have elsewhere expressed, that the recent successes of Her Majesty's troop.s may le:id to an eaviy Urininatioji of this unhappy coniliot. 1 have, ii;e., (Signed) JinwAKH Cakdwei.li. Governor Sir Geoige Grey, K.CJJ., A:c. &c. &c. I'xci.osuni:. War Ullice, Juno 27, ISG-i. Sin, —I am directed by tho .Secretary of State for War to transmit, for the information of the Secretary of .'State for the Colonies, a e >py of a letter ir.m the Controller of Aruiv expenditure: in .New Zealand, relative to arrangements to provido forage for tho use ol' the forces engaged ill active operations at so great a distance from the base of operations, that it is deemed advisable to cultivate lan i for future supply in the vicinity of the most advanced military posts. Such an arrangement would appear to imply not only a continuance ol hostilities fur a considerable period, but aUO the prolonged occupation by the troops of the advaiue.l posts, with ail the attendant extraordinary expense fer transport and supplies. l'h;.s view of the case is| the more important, since each monthly mail brings reports of progressive augmentation of tho Commissariat Transport establishment, with a corresponding increase in its cost, amounting in February, the last month reported on, to £30,0011. The cost of supplies for tho troops are also continuously augmenting, owing to tho distance at which the operations are being carried into a country which furnishes nollung whatever, except fuel, for the wants oi the forces, and which involves not only heavy e"Uenso lot- tran.-.port by land aud wale:, but also

very great loss and wrate of supplies from the wsmt of ordinary facilities for and from other local causes incidental to the climate and country, Under these circumstances, Lord de Grey deems it expedient that Mr. Card well should he kept fcll v i n _ formed, not only of the progressively augmenting expense of the military operations, but also of any step which appears to indicaie that in the opinion of the military authorities the war is likely to bo prolonged under circumstances which involvo a large and. increasing Imperial expenditure. X have, &c. } (Signed) Habtingtox. The "Under Secretary of State, J.* _ Colonial Office.

Commissariat, Xcw Zealand, Auckland, April 1, IS6-1. Sir., —T have the honour to acquaint you, for the information of the Secretary of State for War, that, on in v recommendation, the iLicut.- General commanding in "New Zealand has been pleased to approve of such land as may be found suitable for the purpose at those placcs where troops are stationed iarthest from Auckland, being' cultivated, in order that the transport animals may be supplied with green fodder in about live months' time, and thereby diminish the transport required for forago at a period of tho year when, from l»nd roads, tho greatest difficulty will be experienced ill supplying the troops -.-.-here hind transport may be necessary. For tliis service the Lieut-General has approved of men of the G'ommissaviat Transport corps being einplovi.-d to prepare the land and sow the grain, and the additional expense, over and above the value of the labour, for seed and fanning implements, will bo about £100.
