Correspondence.
To the Editor of the New Zealand Herald. Sin, —Having noticed in the columns of your ■widely circulated paper the kind and energetic feeling you have displayed on behalf of the widow of our deeply lamented comrade, the lato Sergeant Stewart, R.A., in drawing the public attention to extend their charity in subscribing towards her future support, I beg to bring to your notice the case of the widow of the late Sergeant Egan, JI.A., who is left ill very low, and I may say in almost destitute, circumstances. The battery to which I-ergeant Egan belonged having been only ti few months in this colony, the time has scarcely been sufficient for the expenses incurred in preparing for a long sea voyage being cleared ofT. '.this poor creature, Mrs. Egan," is left with a family of three young children, and although the corps to which she belongs will extend their charity towards her, you would confer a great favor by enlisting the sympathy of the public generally to kindly extend their charity in this (I can assure you) great case of necessity. It will he remembered that Sergeant Egan was found dead in his bed on the morning of the Ist instant.
I am, dear sir, A LovKit of Charity. Auckland, September 17, ISM. [We have mado some inquiries into tho facts as stated by our correspondent, and they have been Verified in every particular, 'lliere can be little doubt but the case ot IVlrs. Egan is a very pressing one, and one that has strong claims on the charitable public. 'Ihe citizens of Auckland are not slow, in many ways, to acknowledge the services of their gallant defenders. What better proof of this can be given, or what more acceptable to the soldier, than to know that whether his life be lost in our service, in battle or by disease, our kindly aid will be extended to his widow and fatherless children r We strongly press upon the public the nece.-sities of this poor widow. Ihey are indeed, as has been represented, very grievous.—En. A.Z.H.]
