The Aative Bebellion.
CAMP ALEXANDRA. [FBOM OUR OWN COBBEBPONT'KHT.] August 28. The works at this place are steadily progressing, although as yet the men of the 2nd "Waikato Begiment hare not been placed upon their town allotments. A most melancholy occurrence took place here last week. A man named Allcock, a private in the above regiment, having obtained a pass to visit his wife in Auckland was unhappily drowned, through flic overturning of n canoe between this and Te Rore. 11 appears that wliilßt crossing a deep but rapid creek, by means of the said canoe (which is but a little bit of a thing), in company with two other men, thev managed to upset it, and all three fell into the creek. Tlie unfortunate man Allcock being unable to Bwim, and moreover encumbered with a heavy swag, Bunk at once like a stone, but was seen by his comrade to rife again, about thirty yards away, throw up his arras, and then sink to rise no more. Thoy wero powerless to assist him; indeed, it was almost a miracle that they escaped themselvoß, for neither of them could swim. I consider this method of crossing the creek to be highly dangerous. A small bridge could easily be thrown over this narrow creek, .at a very light expense ; and as it is at present the rapid current continually shifts the canoe which is fastened at each end to the two baukß. The last time T was crossing Iliad to jump at least four feet, and in doing so the bend of the canoe dipped completely under water. This should be seen to, for men are crossing and re-crossing daily. The news of Major Antrobus' death has been received here with unmingled sorrow by every man in the regiment to which he belonged. He was an officer much beloved by his men, and his loss to them is irreparable.
The recent hoary rains havn flooded tho swamps, and raised the river Waipa to an unusual height. Last night, 27th, there was a hard frost—two inches of ice being shown on the surface of swamp wafer. The rain has again commenced. So much for this fickle climate.
