SYDNEY.

Tho ( Amateur' arrived to-day from California, with -1000 quarter hags of Hour, 3-179 sacks of wheat, and 039 bags of bran. The tlour market was firmer to-dav, inconsequence of the news received from California. Several small lots of fine Hour were sold at .C2S per ton cash, and holders are now unwilling to sell large lots at present quotations. The whole of the wheat ex 'Amateur* has been sold to Mr. Barker at full rates. The present quotation is l'Js. her bushel, and at this price small sales have been made. .Mr. "\V. ]>ean held to-day an important sale by auction. It included the cargo of Java produce ex ' Johann and lleiurich,* Mauritius and Cossipore sugars, large parcels of teas, also oilmen's stores, &c. The sale attracted a good attendance of merchants, grocers, and others, and the bidding throughout was animated. About fifty tons of the Java rice was sold at £27 per ton, tho balance being withdrawn for a higher price. J;iva cotteo all sold at 1 Oil. to 10-Jd. Sugars were hardly so firm, and large parcels were placed at n shade lower than previous rates—prices ranging from CJO to iw2, and qualities from ration to Xo. 1 Cossipore. The'toas catalogued embraced largt- parcels, being the balances of shipments ex * Cronkbane,' 'Congo,' ' Broeymatia,' and ' Balder,' impel ted by Messrs. Brown & Co. Tho trade showed a good disposition to operate, and bought freely. The whole of the tt •as were disposed of; prices ranging from £'> lUs. to .'JIO 10s. per chest. Parcels oi' oilmen's stores were quitted at current rat- s. From Melbourne we have papers to the 2nd inst. The reports as follows: — Jattle occurred to-day in the import market worthy of being reported. Flour continues very linn. The reports from the country districts are not altogether favourable. "Woolpacks are in demand, but there are none offered. Among the arrivals to-day, that of a barque from an Fast Indian port, with 17,000 bags of suijar, i-< reported. A Bremen vessel, the Frederick Martin,' has also come in from New York, with a quantity of oil and tobacco,J and 'a miscellaneous cargo. Few freights are offering at present, but engagements could be made for the run to Calcutta and back at (14 per ton. AVe have news from California to the 2->th oi April. Two vessels had secured cargoes of breadstuffs for the colonies, —viz..: the ship i Lokett,' which sailed before the 1 Amateur* loft, for Sydney, witli •5 on tons of wheat and 21)0 tons of Hour, anil the barque ' Jfurhnrv,' which had cleared for Auckland with 5000 quarter-sacks of Hour, and 117Gbagsof oats, In consequence of the warm weather a considerable advance had taken place in the price oi wheat and tlour, and it was found dillicult to execute orders except at very high rates. The following is from the Baihj llrcninq HnUrtiu Monday, April 25—1 p.m. The market for (lour and wheat is decidedly better. Holders of best wheat are asking 2\ edits, per lb., but cannot get it. Superfine flour cannot be bought below (> dollars, extra 7 dollars. There ait buvcrs for barley on the market for shipment to Saeranieiito, with round sales for that- destination at 2} cents. Some holders are demanding 'i cents, per lb. Oats are scarce. Ulan is dillicult to procure at even 30 dollars per ton. Hay is advancing and so potatoes. Beans arc yet quiet. Wool is of free sale at old prices. In anticipation of a short crop of feed grains, hay, et'\, quite a number of orders have been sent east for shipments of cornmeai in puncheons and barrels at Xew York for this market. We are already aware of about 1000 barrels and 100 hogsheads kiln dried meal already en route to this port. The sales embrace the following:— Flour.—-2200 half and quarter casks superfine, 0 dollars ; *1-00 Alviso Mills, 7 dollars, now held at 7 dollars 2o cents. The price of city brands extra is, we believe, advanced to 7 dollars to 7 dollars o0 cents for jobbing lots. Wheat. —.Market firm at 2to 2 1 , edits ; some ask more. Best milling is worth 2J to 2} cents. Barley.—2l)oo sacks in one lot, private, but quotable at 2} cents.; other sales in lots at 2} to 3 cents. Oats. —-000 sacks, at 2 dollars 00 cents, to 2 dollars. Wool.—GO bales at 21 cents, per lb. Bran.—Scarce and wanted, at 28 dollars to 30 dollars per ton. jjuans.—Rather more inquiry at old prices. Ilav.—Quick sale at 30 to '■>■> dollars; tho hitter fur choice. Potatoes.—Firm, 1 j to 11 cents, per lb. for best. The Bulletin remarks tha~t coal appears to bo considerably enquired for, but the terms generally withheld. The present rulling prices paid for Sydney do not. cover cost and charges. The following extracts are taken from private advices received by the ' Amateur' : — For the last two weeks wo have had very hot weather and an exceedingly close atmostphere, which has nearly, if not entirely destroyed the little benefit of previous rains. There has been no wheat offered for sale, and prices are nominal. Holders become alarmed at the warm weather and the lack of moisture, and refused to name a price for their parcels. \V,j hardly know what to say regarding our market, for wheat and flour, and doubt if ever before it was in a like condition. We quote wheat to-dav at. 2 dollars 2o cents. ; none whatever offering at those or oven advanced figures. Flour, superfine, in 50 11). bags, 6 dollars 50 cents, to 7 dollars. Oats: Good shipping parcels are very scarce, and the market is firm, at 3 cents, to 3J cents, per lb. Barley : There is no chevalier to ho obtained at any price. —JfcmM, July G.
