A SHIP ON FIRE AT BLACKWALL.
About a quarter before one o'clock, a.in., on Satur(lav. a telegraphic message was received at the chict station ill "W.-uliiig-sircet, t)i:it a ship was burning in Messrs. "Wigram's Yard, at Jilackwall. Captain Shawgave orders for the engine* to be dispatched from sundrv stations. anil -also started himsell, as did the I Juke of Sutherland, Lord Richard Crosvcnor, M.P., the lion. Stuart Wort ley, J lon. Captain Howard, and a body of firemen. I"pon reaching Uiaekwull, it was found l hat the outbreak bad commenced ill _tin; large ship under repair named the Princess oi Wales, Captain ] lead, of the Hudson's I Jay Company, of •">'.»> tons register, which was burins; furiously between the midships. This large vessel was lying in l.essrs. Wigram's dry doc-k.iiiiil:i tire raging 'amongst sneli valuable proper! v and in such a confined place caused great excitement to prevail, and the lioating engines of the Hast and West India J lock Companies were brought alongside the ship, as well as one ol the private engines belonging to the i'irni. These were followed by numerous oilier engines. Tlie wliole ol'this force was called into operation, and Hoods of water discharged upon the llames, but being confined below tliehatchwavs it was a work of no little dillieulty for the liremen to reach the seat of the eonllagration, and it was found absolutelv necessary to scuttle the ship ; but even that was a. work of great dillieulty, for owing to the tide being down the lircmen could only allow the water to pas.-Tinlo the hold of the ship and oul again as the water receded. Large porlions of the ship an: destroyed, and she is ollicially reported as being severe]v damaged by tire and the attempt at scuttling. The origin of the 'misfortune could not be learned. The lircmen wen: unabled to leave the ship until seven hours alter the discovery ol the lire, ami even then engines were obliged to be kept in the dock lest another outbreak sliouldtake place. — hrcniu// Herald, April 1.
