Twentv-live were assaved by Messrs. llewston and Co., 10 by Messrs. S. Molitor and Co., 8 by GA\ . llell, ;1 by Messrs. JL Harris and Co., :md tlie remainder by Messrs. B.C.'. (ievasey, (Jreenwood and Newbain, L'odens and Ruhhng. There is also one i»i" " foreign coin missing, and several express paresis containing bullion. The (lolden (late was j an American steamer, and was wrecked in duly, l.Sfi'J, when a great loss of life took place. The total amount of gold and specie on board was about £-];30,0U0, consigned to several iirius in New ork, London, and Paris, and the whole of it was insured. TheVinderwriters, on hearingW the wreck, dispatched a special agent, to the scene of the wreck to recover, impossible, the treasure. Alter considerable ■ exertions a large amount of gold was discovered, but owing to the dangerous character of the currents ami climate a jrreat many lives were lost in ihe enterprise. 8- veral expeditions went to tao wreck ; some failed, and others were unsueeosstul, and the gold in que>ti-»n was recovered by one party, who immediately decnupcd with Iho valuable store.
