To the Editor of the Ne Zeland Herald.
Camp, Rhodes' Clearing, llitli April, 186-]-. Sir, —You will oblige me very much by publishing these few lines in your valuable journal, concerning the moveable column under the command ot' Major Kvan, now stationed at Bhode's Clearing. In tlie mouth ol Jsepwmber, IWfiJJ, while stationed at iSelby s farm, near Queen's Kedoubt, under the command ot that gallant oilicer, Colonel Xixun, Commanding Colonial IJefciac Korcc. the men's attention was driuvti one afternoon to hear a gencnii order read, which order was as follows, vi/.. : — Officers, non-commissioned olticcrs, and men. nowattached to tin' -Mcneuble Column, will receive pav from the Colonial Government: ollicers, 55.; noncommissioned ollicers and men, Is. per diem," which pay they drew up lo the 2!Jth of February last, cilice that time the Column lias received no pav from the Colonial Government. It was never read to the men that such pay was stopped. I have always seen this done. Any allowance published for a soldier to rcceiva in General Orders, such order will be published again to stop it. But such has not been the case witli the Movable Column. Xow, at the \ery time that it would be most useful to the men, coming on the winter, it seems lo be taken away. Ihe men of the Movable Column are very anxious to know it the pay really is stopped, and then they will live no longer in suspense. Bv publishing this letter, you will greatly oblige Your humble servant, Om: or tHi: Muckaiii.k Column.
