A TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF A DEPARTED COMRADE.
Wf. have received the following communication of the death of Sergt. B. Phillips, of the 05th Jfegt., who was, we believe, a general favorite of both the ofiieers and men of his regiment, and of many civilians, who numbered him among their acquaintance:— A painful announcement will appear in your issue of to-da}- —the death of Color-Sergeant B. Phillips, Goth Ucgiment. May I, as one who linew him well, ami loved him not less—pay to his memory the only tribute a sorrowing comrade can ol'er. Color-Sergeant Phillips served in the tioth Regiment for more than 21 years, 18 of which he spent, in this colony. During his stay in Auckland he secured, by his upright Christian conduct, the esteem and regard of a large circle of friends—who will mourn with me his loss.
By his officers he was universally respected— he was endeared to his brother sergeants and comrades by many amiable and generous qualities—and by many fond ties, which death cannot sever.
As a Christian, he was devoted. As n soldier, he was, in all respects, " thorough"—bold and fearless in the performance of his duty. As a man, he was truly upright. As a companion, he was invaluable —his wit was (lowing, and his Inn gunge full of a grace peculiar to the profession of arms.
Sergeant Phillips was likely soon (had he lived) to have returned to England, where an aged father, whom he dearly loved, will mourn the loss of a most affectionate son.
A wife, too. will shed bitter tears over a once faithful and loving husband, but now cold and inanimate form. God help her. We mourn, but not without strong hope.
