THE 'EMPRESS.'
The ship 'Empress,' from Wool«Hc1i, arrived in harbour last night at 10'30, with the i'.i i aij Train, and a large quantity ol stores, Ax., which, we have no doubt, will bo a welcome accession to the army under the command ol our gallant General.
The Moot.* Cask- —Yesterday the time ofthc Court Mils taken up in liearing the application made by Mrs. Louisa Monk against her husband, jW'aiorTV". Moule, now colonel, we believe, of the 2nd Waikato regt., for maintenance. Jt appears that Major Mottle hud left; Ins wile without food or means, and ho urged as a reason for this nedeet that she had encouraged tiie visits of a gentleman in this town. IS o indiscretion, however, was proved against her be\ond the mere fact, of forming an acquaintance with a stranger, and receiving his visits, though on every such occasion it was proved that the serrant girl ■u'.'u; present. IX sueli eviucnee were taken as proof of guilt, many innocent manic women would be ruined and the characters oi gentlemen, who, favored with their society, damaged. The Court refused to grant Ihe application for maintenance, remarking that the case was discreditable to both parlies. Cattle Smrs.—For the convenience of inspectors of cattle ships arriving in this pori, it has been arranged that Twi -3-, being an additional signal to the present code, shall be hoisted at the signal station, Mount- \ ictoria. Tjcis Q.cbi:x-sti:>:kt Wuaiu'. —So crowded is the state of the wharf owing to Ihe impossibility of procuring carts to convey the material landed there, to the different parts of the (own where it is required, that the wharfinger, Captain JLCllis, has found it necessary to issue n notice that unless a quantity of timber, posts, rails, &c., lying on thewharf. is not removed before 4 p.m.thisday, that they will be removed by the wharfinger at the risk and expense of the owners. In the present state of affairs it is no fault of the owners that tlio material is lying where it is. Carts, although there are 103 licensed by the City Jibanl, cannot be obtained for love or money ; so great are the icquireiuents of tlio Commissariat. Feu it y Si;i!Vici:s. —Tenders for ferry services at l'uhoi, Mangawai, and lutipara haivHiur, will be received at the oi'iice of the Superintendent, until noon of A\ ednesday, the 10th &f March next. O'Brien. Tin; S'i i;i:i:ts. —Yesterday the wind held high carnival in Queen-street, blustering and rollicking about.—now raising a cloud of dust, like an Fgyptiau plague, carrying it up the street in one driving blinding mass, and anon flying off at a tangent: and sweeping the greater part of it into some unlucky linen-draper's shop —or meeting with the side eddies, which came down the cross-streets, striking up into a wild enjoyment, of "• ihe mazy." and waltzing now tip and down, and then across, whirling its partner, the dust, in everybody's way. A Loudon fog is a terrible nuisance in its way. c.nd so, doubtless, is a Sydney bricktiehler, but these are beyond the control of bodies corporate. Yesterday's dust, however, was as great a nuisance as either could have ever been, and what makes it still move unendurable is, to know that it might have been put- a stop to years since.
